Swapping a 3OTT to a C4

Post by Erikf100 »

I am a new member on here even though I have been reading for years. This has possibly been explained 100 times but I am wanting to start this swap this weekend and I would love to know what problems others have found before I get a surprise.

I have 2 72 f100s
1 LWB 240 with c4 and 1 swb with a 300 3OTT

I want to swap the c4 to the swb. The 3ott has already been converted to a floor shift and was done pretty sorry and sloppy. Reverse is knuckle busting the dash and 1st is touching the seat. Since the swb has a running 300 and a better body I want to put the c4 in there so I can get back to my body work and rebuild.

From everything I have read this is an easy swap. Just pull all the parts and switch-a-roo. Am I wrong or is there something I am missing? Thanks for the help. I will post pictures of both trucks soon
Erik

Hey basket and thanks for the reply

I am going to pull the steering column from my lwb so it will all match up. My other truck has a brand new radiator so I will use it. I know I need to get the trans cooler, from the 240. Just didn't know if anything else needs to be removed. I am going to be doing the pulling myself but will probably have to take it to a mechanic friend for the install. I want to get it checked out since the C4 hasn't been run in a while and make sure I am not missing something. A shift kit might be in the works for it too.

Erik,
Worth it IMO to just go ahead and have the C-4 rebuilt and throw a new torque convertor in it. This usually only cost around $400-$500, (if you call around for a "bench job") and well worth it in the long run as it's so much work to pull it back out later. :2cents:
I love my "slushboxes", (yet know little about them). There are a few guys here that know a lot more about them-maybe one of them can pipe in here with a little more help.

I am looking at rebuild kits now, I have done a few with my dad but he has past away. I am not building a racecar so all the kits seem to be based for a high hp motor. Does anyone know of a good rebuild kit. I know the 300 is stout but I don't need a 400+ hp kit.

Making an update that pesky cross member in the front under the donor trans is getting in the way so wednesday I am going to finish taking it out.

I read tonight about my lwb C4 won't work with my SWB does anyone have any ideas on that. The LWB has the 2 part drive shaft, and the SWB is a single drive shaft unit. I was really hoping this was a simple pull, rebuild and swap or I think it should be anyways.

Anyone got any info.
