C-6 Sitting for years... is it ok?
I have a C-6 I plan on putting in my truck. It came out of a donor 78' the tranny was in the truck the whole time with fluid and with dip stick in etc... the truck was in my family and was told the motor went out, but the transmission was fine. (motor was a 302)
My question is the tranny ok to use? I have put new filter, pan gasket, front and rear seal. Also, the fluid was nice and red, not burnt smelling, and was no metal shavings in the pan. The plug the factory puts in the dip stick tube was still in the bottom of the pan.
P.S. the inside of the bellhousing looked a little wet and greasy could it be the big "O" ring on the pump? If so can you buy these individually?
P.s.s. the transmission is currently not bolted to the motor and is on the bench.
Thanks, Cole

Probably not, what color "greasy" like tranny red or engine oel, intake or valve cover leak, check the small hole down in the lower corner to see if there is any fluid in it use a Q tip to swab around...there is a pin in there for the servo lever & a small cup plug to fill the bore where the pin was installed. there is no pressure but some of these were not fitted tight enough & they would weep fluid.....If you don't have a seal installer & are using just a hammer & a drift to install the seals....put a few dabs of petroleum jelly on the garter spring to keep it in place...also do not use a front GRAY National seal, if National, make sure it is black the sealing material, that is............ Donnie
might want to check the modulator, the spring is probably OK, but the dia. may be deteriorated .........good luck

So just so were on the same page your saying the o ring needs replacing? I have already cleaned and painted the transmission. Actually it might have come from when I had it on a engine stand and was cleaning it I had it rolled upside down so fluid could have come out then?

Also, I do have a national front pump seal, but the metal part of the seal is orange in color and the rubber is black?

Re: C-6 Sitting for years... is it ok?
National seal , Black is GOOD.....it is pretty uncommon for the front pump to leak at the case, if the bolts were loose then YES it could leak, but if the bolts were tight, there is a gasket & an 'O" ring that the fluid must pass...be sure to check your converter for wear where the seal rides..
you should be able to see the contact area, but not feel it with your finger nail....
The most common failure in the older C6, if it has not been rebuilt is the inner seal in the foreward clutch drum as it was made of a material that was not able to withstand the heat transferred thru the shaft from the converter to the drum.
This can be evidenced by a slow apply after sitting over night...there are other reasons for a slow apply, but this is the most common, the other is converter drainback.......not to worry, hope this is a 2 wd, an easy install.............good luck...donnie

Yes, it is a 2 wheel drive. Gonna test it when get it running before we put the fenders and everything back on... put the new pump gasket and o-ring on tonight along with new front seal, and filled tc with fresh type f fluid. Thanks again for the help!

What do you mean by "slow apply"? Does this mean that it won't engage or shift up until it warms up? I've had other, newer non-Ford vehicles that don't shift up while warming up, but I thought this was programmed into the tranny/engine/computer to give the engine a chance to warm up before I flogged it. Is this something else?
Thanks,
Joseph

Re: C-6 Sitting for years... is it ok?
Joseph, you are correct about newer vehicles having a coolant sensor relaying data to the processor to delay shifting a colds engine
Chry products are the most problematic as I see it in the delay shift & delay converter lock up apply...But others have this delay too.
I was speaking directly about the early C6 delay in movement in the foreward position only, having to wait a few seconds before the truck will apply in the foreward only........if you have an instant reverse, but a slow apply in foreward, what I explained apply's... Sorry to cause confusion, some times I add advise that was not asked for, thinking that I may help someone reading the post..
I think that I should stick to the question that is asked, but yes, you are correct
