My 1970 F100 302 V-8 3 speed manual trans pickup has a mechanical fuel pump on the driver's side of the block. It has a single vertical cylinder attached to the bottom side that is maybe 2 inches in diameter and 4 inches long, and I think (thought) that was a spin-on fuel filter. There is no small in-line filter at the fuel line entrance to the carb. Looking on line to buy a new filter I cannot find anything that looks like what I have. In the local salvage yard I see many pumps on 302's with two smaller diameter cylinders hanging off the bottom side that are clearly part of the fuel pump casting.

I could use some advice on this. Is there a fuel filter attached to the bottom of my fuel pump ? If not, I apparently have no fuel filter at all. I can post a photo link of my pump if necessary.

I believe you should have an in-line fuel filter somewhere in the system.. That's what I use. Some people even use two, one before the fuel pump and one after.

The V-8 in general had the fuel pump/filter combination you've described here:

They can be a pain sometimes to get to unscrew if they haven't been opened for awhile, (I'd put some teflon tape on the threads when you screw it back on). It's a common fuel filter inside the cannister the most parts stores carry. Maybe post a picture of it just so I'm not telling you to wrench on a non-serviceable fuel pump assembly. :lol:

I have traced the fuel line from the tank up to the carburetor. No in-line filters. What my pump looks like can be seen here: http://s1153.photobucket.com/albums/p51 ... elPump.jpg The engine and frame are dirty, I know. Working on that. Power washer wouldn't even touch the stuff - putty knife.

Like Jeff said just spin it off and the fuel filter is inside that canister. Any auto parts store will have one. Good luck

And be gentle with the rubber O-ring that seals the cannister to the bottom of the pump! I'd gotten some brands of these filters that came with a new O-ring-and some others that you had to re-use the old O-ring. The O-rings tend to swell up after awhile and not want to seal very well. :hw:

Thanks all for your knowledge. Car Quest does indeed have a catalog number for the filter element inside the cannister. But the counter guy still came out to the parking lot to have a look at it... The truck's older than he is.

Hey, if the kid is willing to come out and take a look, there's promise that you've got a good 'un! Keep him around; hopefully, he'll start to do some research on the old Fords on his own! Wish my parts guy would take a look (and an interest)!

Wilma... what part of colorado are you in? I deal with my local carquest in canon city colorado all the time. They will have every part needed for your fuel system. I also just got an inline fuel filter that is what ford had used and is an oem replacement.

Where can I get that fuel line # 9369?

I have been looking for a replacement but no MFG sells that as an aftermarket.

You might have to make it yourself. You can probably borrow a tube bender and double-flare tool at your local AutoZone, then buy the fittings and steel tubing, and go for it. I have a similar tube that I need to make for my Edelbrock carb, but I keep putting it off for stupid reasons. Maybe tomorrow ...

Where can I get that fuel line # 9369?

I have been looking for a replacement but no MFG sells that as an aftermarket.
I did exactly what Joseph said two years ago, (actually replaced ever line on my truck) but I've worked with flare tools my entire HVAC career so it was easy for me. Have you tried these folks for the gas line?

The light truck fuel pumps have the filter canister at the bottom. Car-type fuel pumps do not.

I have an in line fuel filter spec'd on line that screws right into the base of the carb. Is that stock or an added item? My manuals only show that as a fuel line connector in the shop manual and I don't see anything showing in line. Canister is all changed and squeaky clean. just wonder if it's necessary
