Re: dana 24 t case problems
Sounds like it might be wore out. The 2 piece main shaft has a pocket bearing that wears. This can cause it to pop out if I remember right. A np205 is a good canidate to swap in place of the dana24

Re: dana 24 t case problems
It bolts right in. The only issue is with the speedometer cable. You will need to take the ends of the speedometer cable that you get the transfer case from and install them onto your speedo cable and housing. The Dana 24 uses a screw in type and the NP205 uses a plug in type that is held in with a small bolt and clip. I did this on my truck and it works great. Have to give thanks to Average250 for helping me when I did it.

Lot of people go for the 205 but you can still get all the bearings and seals for the 24 from www.rockauto.com Got to looking at that the other night and the prices aren't too bad.....

Re: dana 24 t case problems
Excelent point. The only problem is that if the main shaft is damaged on the 24 there is no repiar for that as far as I know. I rebuilt my 24 before I went to the 205 and am much happier now. Just my . Good luck either way.

Re: dana 24 t case problems
Most have damaged pocket bearing bores like Doug stated.
The only practical fix is boring the worn area out to true it up and installing a bushing to eliminate the bearing.
You won't be disappointed with the 205, but there's a good chance a 24 will have issues sooner rather than later.

Got a 205 in the bronco and love it of course they are just bulletproof. It's neat to learn the faults of the 24's. Helps to keep your mind straight. Mine has been nothing but good so far. I sure hope saying that dosen't make it come apart tommorrowaveragef250 wrote:Most have damaged pocket bearing bores like Doug stated.

Re: dana 24 t case problems
A lot of people say that then they switch in a 205, notice they can hear another person talk without shouting on the freeway and realize just how shot thier old 24 really was. The 24's don't fail spectacularly, they just slowly get louder and louder as the upper bearings gain clearance.Manny wrote: Got a 205 in the bronco and love it of course they are just bulletproof. 205's aren't bulletproof, but they are a 20 year newer design than the Dana 24.

Check the simple things. You already checked linkages, have you checked transfer case mount bushings?
