Bolted on the new disc brake dust shield

Packed new bearings and installed the inner with new seal, crammed a wad of axle grease in, slid the assembly on, set the outer bearing with washer and nut, then preloaded the bearing, backed off the nut, installed castle retainer and new cotter pin.

Popped a cheap dust cap on (Chinese crap) to hold the grease in until I can get a couple of good ones. Just gotta do the other side and I'll be ready for tires and wheels. I'm not going to do the calipers until I get new brake lines and hoses. I just wanted to get it rolling so I could push it out in the driveway and wash the past year's dust and pollen off of it.

Just read this from front to back. I would soooo like to do the same thing but don't have a place to do it. Looks really good. This thing is sure going to drive nice. I know how hard it is to stay patient and do it right and stay motivated when all you want to do is drive the thing. Keep up the good work.

Thanks basshound! Definitely a labor of love. Installed the RH radius arm and hub/rotor this morning. Also got the engine perches bolted in

I had lost my parking brake equalizer extension cables so bought some new one's from NOS Ford Parts in TX.

I also bought new E-brake cables from the local parts store and installed them when I did the rear brakes. Went to hook the little extension cable brackets to 'em and discovered a slight difference in the slug on the end of the aftermarket E-brake cables which interfered with the slug on the extension cable. So I whipped out my trusty cutoff tool and whacked it down to fit.

It still looks solidly crimped/soldered so I don't think it'll pull loose.

Then hooked the other end of the extension cables in the equalizer bar and ooops! the new cables were too long.

Fortunately, Larry (Forrestbump) had scored me a parking brake equalizer set, since I had lost mine, and he had the foresight to throw in the cables too. Thanks Larry!

Anybody need a set of NOS cable extensions? Gonna clean up my old drag link and tie rods, I'm getting new one's later, install my steering gear and my old tires and wheels and I'll be ready to roll her out in the driveway for a good washing!

Randy, looks good man! I have a couple questions.

What brand and part number parking brake cables did you get, and from which parts store?

What does the opposite end of your cables look like? Reason I ask - My replacement cable has a crimped cylinder on one end, and a crimped ball on the other. The crimped cylinder end (also end with the spring and silver fitting) goes to the brake plate/brake, and the ball end (with the gold fitting with keeper) goes to the equalizer end.

Mine's a '69, is it really that different from a '70, or are you just messing with us?

Thanks Tyler! I bought mine at O'Reillys. Pioneer Inc. - Brake Cable: CA5219 and CA5218. I went cheap and in stock. The Wagner's were 3 times the price and had to be ordered. Maybe that's why they're different. The other end (spring end) sounds just like what you described but the equalizer end had the same cylinder type slug as the brake end. The spring clip fitting that goes through the crossmember wasn't the snuggest fit either but it stays put. You've got a short box, right? Mine's a long bed, hence the extensions. O'Reillys didn't spec out long or short bed when I asked about 'em. The one's I got would not have been an issue with a short bed 'cause they'd go straight from the crossmember to the eq bar without the extension and the longer slug wouldn't matter. When I push in on the equalizer bar I can feel/hear the E-brakes working so I think they're OK to run with.

Got it, thanks for the explanation, and for the part numbers. I'm looking for a right side cable for mine, apparently they don't make them for a late '69, and I'm still scratching my head about why I can't just get one for a '70. I'll figure it out. Sorry to ask the question, they just looked so different, I had to bring it up. And I do have the extension cables, as mine is a LB, the configuration is identical to yours. I reassembled them Sunday night, that's why I'm so interested.

I looked at a pic of my originals, installed, and now see the difference. The originals were held in place by hairpin type spring clips. The aftermarket has the same collar on it that goes through the backing plate, the little prongs that bend out. Not a snug fit but they won't fall out either. The Wagner's may be different.

She rolls! Installed the drag link, tie rods and steering gear along with the "custom" steering column my friend made me. I left the power steering lines on her to prevent contamination. Got tires and wheels on her, pushed out in the driveway and gave her a good pressure wash with Simple Green.

That it does Bobby. Almost exactly 13 months after I first pulled her into the garage and started disassembly. It's a momentous occasion. The first time that side of the garage has been thoroughly swept in over a year.
