C/6 to 3spd swap

Post by AmericanMuscle67 »

I am considering swapping out my c/6 to a 3spd column.

What all would need to be done, like a step by step of sorts?

Seeing as I have never owned a 3spd column I think that I would like to have it finally.

remove two bolts under dash. unplug wiring. under hood remove bolts from rag joint. remove four bolts on black plate above column remove hose clamp looking thing. and remove linkage from column. the install is the reverse of taking it out.

the items you will need : the 3 spd column the black plate from that matches the column power steering or manual. and the linkage for the tranny. also you will need the 3 spd tranny. guys did i miss anything. i know it not detailed but its not hard either.

clutch assm? Any modifications to get the one from the donor to fit? I belive it will need to be a 67 assm. Correct?

Also, is the 3spd column the same length as the auto I have now?

i don't know about the tranny stuff. but the columns i think are different lengths. yes the manual is shorter but it does have some adjustment. that depends on wheather you have the bendix steering box or the saginaw box. as to wheather it will be an easy fit. check out the tutorials to see pics of both boxes.

I have a saginaw box. I am actually thinking about a conversion back to manual.

i'd stay with the saginaw if its in now. i almost forgot you'll need a clutch pedal also. the bracket and all will have to be changed if its a factory automatic.

Yup, I have a donor truck sitting with ahold on it in a scrap yard down the street. It should have everything I want for this, not to mention other goodies :)

I really like my 3 on the tree--especially the fact that most punks don't have the faintest idea how to move the thing--a built in theft deterrent!!

Anyway I thought that I would mention the only downfall that did affect me is NO grannie low. Most of the time NO problem BUT try to pull a ski boat out of the water and BIG problem. The 300 has the torque but to get it moving we got good at using the boat to help push. An auto has a torque converter so it will rpm up and go.

If your not pulling heavy loads I think you'll like it!!

If your gonna do all that, you might think about a T18. It's a granny
gear 4spd. Never use 1fst, but it's there if you need it. 6to1 1fst.
