Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild

All right, after much procrastination and second guessing I went and did it. Bought the PowerTrax No Slip http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWT-92-0690-2800/ This is going to require disassembly of the carrier. I went back and forth, and read and studied, and posted and replied and decided to go ahead and do it myself. So here goes. I won't elaborate on removing the differential from the axle housing and start with disassembly on the bench. After chasing it around the bench, I built this cage to hold it.

Mark the carrier clamp brackets so you know which is left and right and remove the 2 bolts holding each one on. Don't let the adjusters fall off on the floor!

That's all that's holding the carrier in so just lift it out and set it to the side. You may need to rotate the pinion yoke a little to get it free.
Photo02281736_1.jpg
The bearings will have to be pressed off and new ones pressed on. Now flip it over where you can get to the bottom and the pinion shaft casing. Remove the 5 bolts holding it on and a couple of smacks with a block of wood and a hammer should break it loose.
Photo02281750.jpg
A little wiggle and it'll slide right out.

Now to remove the pinion pilot bearing. Flip the case back up and you'll see the pilot bearing and it's snap ring.
Photo02281809_1.jpg
This little ring is the most aggravating part of the whole removal. There's no holes or anything for snap ring pliers so break out the screwdrivers and picks and pry it out. Took me over 30 mins and much lost hide but I got it out.
Photo02281812.jpg
The pilot bearing comes out easily. It's only loose rollers with a wire cage holding them in. And guess what's underneath it...another of those snap rings! :x

Flip the case back over though, and you'll see a keeper ring like this
Photo03011915.jpg
Gently pry it out, being careful not to damage it as I don't know if you can easily replace it. Flip the case back over the other snap ring pushes out a lot easier with a little pry and a nudge. Now back to the pinion shaft. Remove the pinion yoke nut. You'll be better off with an air impact and a 1-1/16" socket. It's an interference fit lock nut and doesn't come off easily. Hang on to it, you'll need it for reassembly and gear setting. Once it's off the yoke slides off easily with a little tap and then the collar and the crush sleeve.

Knock out this seal and the bearing falls out with it.
Photo03011754.jpg
I bought this bearing and seal kit and it contains everything you need to replace, including a new crush sleeve, o-ring, locktite and marking compound http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... 60009_____ Now it's ready to have the bearings replaced.
Photo03011839.jpg
I don't have a press so I'm taking it to a local rear end mechanic who's going to press 'em off and on for me. I'll be back with the reassembly in a couple of weeks.

From you and the other project threads! I found this fantastic website with all the information you ever wanted to know about '67-'72 Ford trucks. It's called Fordification.com! Seriously, I've never done most of this stuff before. I've got an old gearhead friend at work that answers some of the technical questions but most everything I attempt I research here and other places on the web and just dive right in. Wouldn't have been able to do any of this without this forum. You guys are the greatest! Thanks for the encouragement!

I am digging this project. It brings back memories for a couple reasons. I rebuilt a white truck and I remember most of the steps you are currently going through. I know its a long ways from you, but check out the GA SC TN meet and greet thread under Shows and events. Its the second to last Saturday this month. Late lunch (BBQ). In Elberton GA

Excellent job on the axle write up Randy. I'd always wanted a Detroit for the 9" axles I'd owned, but could never afford it. I welded the side gears of my 76' EB to make it positive. The 38's had a real...nice chirp every corner I turned on asphalt.
I bet it will hook up nicely now!

Hey randy..should've answered in "drivetrain" but it didn't come back to me until I saw the pic's(to much indulgence in my younger yrs   )here. I do believe I pressed my against the side without the funny little clip and then put the retainer and clip back in. My main reason for posting was to remind you of this(bottom of the page).... http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =4&t=55365 Not sure how the Powertrax install's,but it has to be similar to rebuilding a Traclck

Thanks for the memory jogger, Jerry! I remember you're thread now. 'Preciate the pointer on the pilot bearing install. Since the PowerTrax replaces the spider gears it probably won't have any alignment issues like you experienced. At least I hope not :? Taking the parts to the bearing shop Saturday and will be leaving them for a few days. Hopefully when I take the week off, I'll get her back together and axles back in the housing. Thanks again to all who've advised and mentored me!

Differential components are at the bearing shop and will be done next week. Visited with the machine shop today and confirmed king pins will be done in my I-beams by the time I take off week after next. Spring has sprung and I'm loving it! Been preppin' an piddlin' today.
