rear axle code

Post by black70cs »

I was decoding my new 70' camper spec. and the axle code it says 38. I don't see 38 under 70' in the vin sect. But there is under 69' Dana 60 3.73. Is this just a mistake or what? I know it has a dana 60 but trying to figure what gears it has. Thanks.

if all else fails, crawl under the truck and look for the tag hanging off one of the bolts holding the cover on.

maybe the factory only had 69 axles hen they built your truck. or it was an early 70. or maybe it was changed at one time.

The Chilton manual says 38 is a 3.73 starting in 75. I don’t know why I am telling you this since I have very little faith in their tables. :hmm:
69 F250, FE Specialties 410, CJ Valves, RPM Intake, Holley 4150,......10 Smiles per gallon
71 Clydesdale in many pieces; 302 roller motor waiting impatiently

Thanks, I'm going to climb under there this weekend and look for a tag. I'm guessing it's a 3.73. When I drove it home it did'nt really scream for another gear coming down the road unlike my 66' with a 4.10. I just wonder why the tag has a code they did'nt use in 70'. I know it's the original door with factory rivets.
