I don't think any overdrive auto was put behind the FE. You might be better off with a gear vendors od unit behind the c6.

PA (and a couple of others) can build you an AOD for an FE.

Take plenty of money...

All the overdrive auto's have a non-FE bellhousing. I have an AOD that's
rebuilt, but I would not recommend using it on an FE. They were made
for the small block's.It is a good tranny, but in my opinion, it would get
hammered behind an FE. If you want to use an auto trans, a C6 with an
overdrive would outlast any other setup. You'll have 6 speeds instead of
4, too. And 2 reverse speeds. JMO

PA (among others) machines off the Small Block bell housing and replaces it with a new one.

I wouldn't recommend putting an otherwise stock one behind an FE, but they can be rebuilt and modified to be very strong.

None, doesn't make the information any less valid.

The CACWBY is running a Ford AOD behind his FE using a Lentech custom bellhousing. Maybe Trevor can provide the needed information. I didn't know there such an animal until I read about his. :D

GUESS IT TURNED OUT TO BE AN INTERESTING TOPIC. THIS SITE AND EVERY BUILDER I'VE SPOKEN TO ARE SPLIT RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE. I'M TOLD THE AOD CAN BE BUILT FOR ABOUT 2200. I CAN GET A GEAR VENDER FOR ALMOST NOTHING. HMMMMMM LET ME THINK. ARE THERE ANY OPTIONS UNEXPLORED? RON

WHILE WE'RE ON THE SUBJECT: IF A CUSTOM BELL HOUSING IS AN OPTION, WHY NOT A E4OD 0R 4R100? RON

Good Question.

I am guessing that they are like a C6 and burn a lot of power, if a lighter transmission can be built to be strong enough, then its sort of like free power. Same reason that putting a built C4 in is popular for racing.

If your C6 is in good shape and the gear vendors is "ALMOST NOTHING" that may well be the better choice. I recall reading somewhere (could even have been here) that there is an electronic control coming out to make it easier to split gears with the GV.

:nono: Ok My Brothers Let's settle down before it gets ugly and I have to Break Open a can of Spinach (I really hate Spinach!) and Whoop ASS  on everyone  !

You gotta ask yourself 'What am I going to DO with my Truck? Is it going to be primarily a Work Truck or A 'Hey everybody look at me' kinda Trucks?
If it's a Work Truck and your really gonna give it a Workout you could never go wrong with a tried and true been "To Hell and Back" Audie Murphy True Blue C6...
A C6 can be modified to handle up to 2,000 American Horsepower. A C4 on the other hand is maxed out at around 400-500 HP and that's pushing it! If your mind is set on a 4 speed Tranny I would suggest the AOD. It's not controlled electronically so you won't have to deal with that headache. The E4OD is a great Boat Anchor. Alot of TSP's and Recalls on that one.
Just like the early ABS systems Electronic/Computer controlled Transmissions were new to the industry and as a result a lot of trial and error engineering was practiced. Their much better at both now but the learning curve was a big one...

Can any of the AOD (automatic) trannies live behind a 390 and still be a drop-in installation (slight modifications would be okay)?

I did this 2 yrs ago, unfortunately am having torque converter issues (not a reason not to do- stuff happens- even to C-6's) at present (Trans Overheats when in OD because TC is bad) but taking it to shop next week. Nothing like cruising 75mph at 2200rpm (with 3.55 r&p). You have to shorten driveshaft and relocate crossmember, and use a floor shifter (though there are now some cable linkages that may solve that issue).
