Replacing Pedal Bushings

Post by jor »

First, thanks to Keith for his great photos of the pedal bushing replacement process. One comment, however:
shouldn't take you more than about 20-30 minutes.
Ha! The darn spring alone took me that long! Anyhow, it's a big improvement. Nice smooth pedal motion with little flexing. My rod is worn (double entendre) so there's still some flex. One suggestion for those that do this fix: Install the spring as the attached photo shows. Mine was in the other way but I found it impossible to remount it. If you configure it like this, it's not bad.

Some may remember, I had the problem of the brake lights going on when I pushed in the clutch. This made for interesting reactions by tailgaters when I hit third gear. Anyhow, this fixed that problem.

Here's a photo of the spring attachment and my worn rod.

I'll be working on mine sometime this winter, I am sure. Have the same issue with the brake lights, and it's actually to the point whee I have to use my toe to bring the clutch pedal that last inch back up.

I've got something different in mind, though. Going to go with bearings on the brackets, and totally eliminate the bushings all together.

Probably not do it myself, as I don't want to goof it up, but the price is right to have this guy do it for me.

Practically guaranteed to never wear out, if you use good, sealed bearings!

Whatever works, that's for sure! I've done stuff like that before, but I just dont have all the tools/equipment that I use to. Slowly getting back there, though. Surprising how you can find bronze bushings and such at places like Ace Hardware that will work just fine for stuff like this (like the one I got yesterday for my clutch equalizer bar 8) )

Thanks for the link, 390nut!
One side of my pedal hanger has a crappy bushing, and I wondered how I was going to replace it.
Now I know! :D
