Hood Substitution?

What hoods will retrofit a 70 model F100? I have some rust on the leading edge of the hood and would much rather find a nice hood than try to weld all of the rust up.

You can use any 70-72 hood, Todd. The earlier ones (67-9) will also
fit but the letter style is different and they aren't drilled for the front
chrome piece.

Thanks, if I had to use a 67-69 hood could they be drilled to use all of the original trim from my 70?

There are also holes underneath on the older hoods. The green is a 72, the red is a 69. I am not sure which one the 70 is, but 71 did not have the holes.

The actual sheetmetal portions of all '67-'72 hoods is identical, aside from the difference in mounting holes for the front emblems, as mentioned above. The side emblems holes are the same for all years.

The subject of the larger holes on the underside has come up here before, but I haven't been able to figure out where those fit into the grand scheme. Both my '67s had those holes....in fact, ALL the parts trucks I've messed with did, and I've had several from all years except '69 and '72, I wasn't even aware there would hoods without them until I saw a few pictures here that people have posted. I'd still like to find out what the story is on those.

I first mentioned the hood hole issue a few months ago when I was comparing my '72 to my brothers '67. I have a spare hood that also doesn't have the holes, I think it's off a '71. I know a '69 has holes, never seen the underside of a '70 hood. So maybe the 71-72 hoods are different underneath?

The 71 and 72 hoods do not have the holes. I have never seen a 70, but the 69 had the holes..so one of those was the cutoff year. Also it could be that some of the later 70s dont holes, and the earlier 70s like the one sport custom has, does have holes..

I just went through my entire picture collection, and can verify that the '72 hoods don't have those holes. Of the 300 '70 pictures I have, they appear to all have those holes (though I can't see many of them, since most people tend to aim their camera down towards the engine when the hood's up.) However, I can't say anything about the '71s...since not a single shot of the 350 '71s I have show the bottom side of the hood, so I'm not sure. However, the one '71 that I've parted out (and still have the hood for) DOES have those holes. It was a Sport Custom with an early production date (third month of production) so it's definitely possible it was a mid-year changeover in '71.

Hey I missed this thread! Yes, sometime in the '71 model year the hood went from holes to no holes. I don't know why the holes were there in the first place.

My 71 is a later 71, so it did not have holes, and I guess my extra 71 hood was also a off a later 71. Do you guys think that the holes would be better..even though it is not a rust spot for these trucks, it would let moisture air out quicker.

the hood holes were probably eliminated due to a possible strengthening of the hood under structure. or maybe just a cost cutting measure of some kind. i am enclosing three hood pics make of it what you will. you can see the structure change from the 93 hood to the 94. bottom center. why were those two supports eliminated? these days probably money. and you can see the difference in the 78 hood compared to a 71-72. there are no holes in the side hood only one.
