Shifter Knob

Post by FRANKdaTANK »

I apologize ahead if this is wrong category or if I missed some info in the specs, but I feel this has to do with interior appearance...

I have a '67 F100 with a 3-speed AUTOmatic shifter on the steering column. Does anybody know how the shift knob on the end is attached, on the automatic??
Does it just screw-on like most manuals?
:hmm:
If it does screw on, does anybody know what the thread size is?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's pressed on, and will be virtually impossible to remove.

Aww man...... I was afraid it was gonna be something like that. Okay thanks for the help.

No, my shift knob is still good and intact. I just had a neat idea to change it up, but I guess it will only work for the manual shifters that unscrew...

Thanks,
Frank

Maybe you could cut it off and thread it? :hmm:

If you don't care about re-installing the factory knob, you could heat up the end of the metal lever with a torch just enough for the knob to melt inside and slide off.

From there you would have to grind any tabs or casting stuff on the end of the lever till it's round. Cut the lever to length, use a die to cut some new threads and your set.

Perhaps someone here has a spare shift lever for you to experiment on, they are only held on to the column by a roll pin.

Hmmm... thanks for the ideas. Now I'm trying to debate if I would want to go through with something like that...

:? :maybe: .Not sure how much difference this makes, but the PO changed the steering wheel and column from the original '67. The steering wheel appears to be from a '76-ish... I know it's definitely not a '67. I'm guessing he used the same truck he got the fuel door from to mold into the side of the bed...
So i"m not sure if the automatic shifter is any different in a '76...'77... :hmm:

See (some people might not like this), but my idea is to incorporate a beer tap handle on the end of the shifter. I know it would probably look better on a manual shifter in the floor, but I still think it would be neat if I could get it to work....

Let me know if anybody knows about the late '70s auto shifters.
Thanks,
Frank

From what I can see on e-bay, the shifter arm is of the same construction. Bump knobs are chrome while the later ones are black.
