aod swap
I read an old post (April) regarding a possible tutorial about an AOD install. Anything developed on that?
With gas going up, $3.10+ in Phoenix, it would be easier on the wallet with OD in Meandad.

re: aod swap
I think, and I am no expert on this , that they are the same length. I have an aod from an 83 ford van and it is the same size as my 70's model c-4

re: aod swap
where in phoenix are you? i am out in the east valley. i had an aod in my 70 shortbed and hated it for the most part. ended up putting a 5 speed in it. i like sticks more anyways. the yoke is the same on all three but i think you need a non lockup converter. thats what i had in mine.

i wouldn't think there would be too much too worry about then the bell housing should bolt up if both trannies are from the same size engine. one thing that may be different would be linkage and trans mount to cross member. the aod i have in my 93 and probably my 94 have a cable for the linkage. the cable just engages the tranny directly. if your unsure do some measuring on the rear mount on both trannies from front top mount and then across the bolts. thats all i can think of at the moment

re: aod swap
you need the flex plate for the aod. that could be a problem since most aod are 50 oz 302 and 351 are 28 oz. i think you need a 157 tooth starter too. i think the later model 351 might be 50 oz.

re: aod swap
I had a good article in hotrod a couple years back. I think the length may be real close. The 2 things to get right are the TV cable (some may call it a kick down, it isnt) adjustment and the shifter detents. One of the guys in the artice messed up 3 or 4 trannys before he realized his shifter was indexing the gear positions wrong on the tranny. Everyone knows about the TV cable, you have to adjust it with just a bit of free play. Find out and get it right or that will ruin a tranny too.

re: aod swap
It was me that put an AOD into my '67 to replace the dead 5-speed. I've been busy retiring form the USAF and getting settled back home. The C-4 and AOD may be the same length. It depends on what the AOD came out of. Some of the trucks had a longer tail housing and output shaft. A C-6 tranny mount worked. I was able to use the driveshaft that was behind the 5-speed. Good luck and I'll try to answer any questions you might have.

re: aod swap
In my opinion you will probably be a little disappointed in the small gains that you get from all the effort. Consider; An average 1970ish shortbed with a stock 302 and C4 tranny will get maybe 15-16 average. Now take a 96ish 5.0(302) with the aod, plus computor controlled engine and lockup convertor and it will still only get 16-17.

re: aod swap
I would be interested in test method. Short term, like partial tank? Filled at the same gas pump under the same conditins? repeated more than once? Tailwind? Coming off the continental divide?
My 96 F-150 made 20+ on a couple tanks with a good tailwind. Exact same trip and turned into the wind, made 12. So I could say it made 20 plus but 15 1/2 was how most tanks went.

re: aod swap
Well I am currently running a 93 5.0 with 300 HP 2400 stall and a C-6 tranny 3.50 gears and getting 15.77 miles per gallon. I am planning to install EFI, AOD and 3.73 gears. Also Lokar makes a kickdown cable that is used with a carb the TV cable is what it is called when it is used on a EFI motor.
If at first you don't succeed. Get another beer.
