Horsepower Sales 4wd Brakes??????

Post by Doug F »

Things that sound too good to be true, usually are. How about these?

http://www.horsepowersales-llc.com/serv ... ts%3AF-100

This is my interaction with them:

I am planning on getting your Drum to Disc Brake kit for my 67 F100 4wd and am wondering a couple of things. First is the master cylinder. Will I need a new master cylinder for the disc brake front/drum rear? Then if I upgrade the rear from drums to disc, will I need another new master cylinder? Will I need a new proportioning valve and different (hard) brake lines? What else would I need with the kit to make the conversion complete?

Their response:

Many guys tell me their stock master cylinder works good when they install the front Disc Brake Kit.
So that would be up to you.
If you add rear disc brakes you should be able to use the same master cylinder.
As for a proportioning valve, it depends on how your brakes are, sometimes you do not need one, and sometimes you do. You have to feel them to see how they react.

What are your thoughts guys? I'm not rich and haven't had any luck finding donor vehicles out here for Factory Discs.

Thanks.

Thanks Keith, I never had to worry about this type of stuff, my Mustang had 4 wheel manual drums and I never had the money to go to disc and never had to deal with any of this. The main reason I am going to discs is because I HATE changing shoes!

I like this kit because it seems like it is all new parts and complete sans MS.
I was right to assume that I would have to use a Disc/Drum MS until I go to Disc/Disc and then get a new MS that deals with that. I agree, $60 for a MS is not a lot of money!

Can you recommend a MS that will work for Disc/Drum in my 67 F100 4wd? and then one that will work for Disc/Disc, so I can keep that in my notes too.

Do you have a source for Stainless brake lines for 4wd? I am having a BEAR of a time finding anyone!

Thanks!

Bill, I believe that 2wd brake systems are fairly easy to find... I will look around for you though and let you know.

Whoops! I should have been more specific above. Sorry, I have everything I need already except the master cylinder with booster to convert to power brakes, that is all I need and I don't know where to get a disc/disc MC. Thanks for the help.

Another source for disc help is TSM which is located in Colorado. They are a nice group of guys to work with and they may be able to get you some stainless steel brake lines for your truck. http://www.tsmmfg.com/

i dont know that 4wd drive makes a difference in which master you use or not. but i would say that a 73 2wd with disc brakes could be the one you want. It all depends on the bore size of the wheel cylinders and calipers. that is how to match your master cylinder bore to the brakes you are using. ask the sellers what size bores the calipers are. and then figure out your rear wheel cylinder bores. then take that to the parts palce and ask them to look it up. i dont have any real info but i have a small chart for 78/79 bore sizes.

Thanks Hazelnut, I will check it out.

I am planning on going with the kit, but have learned a lot by asking questions. NPD has a power brake "kit" for a 67, so I will upgrade that as well.

Doug the kit you posted uses chevy calipers, those are probably ford rotors not sure thou. There may be some minor issue with the new spindles and your stub shafts. I have heard discussion about this issue on the early Bronco discussion boards. Is your axle a high pinion open knuckle, if do the disc brakes from a 75-79ish f100-f150 would work. You need Knuckles out to this swap.
A master cylinder for 75 F100 w/ disc/drum should work fine. I don't think your truck has a proportioning valve factory, only a junction block w/ a light switch in it. I would use a 75-79 F100-F150 combo valve (proportions and the safety switch). This valve can be sourced from a 2 by or 4x4.

Once you convert to rear discs all new ford trucks have disc/disc master cylinders, but I have never tried one on our trucks. Most after market kits use a 70's vintage Corvette master cylinder. There was a Lincoln that had 4 wheel disc's that would probably be the best choice for your needs. What rear axle do have? If it is a Ford 9" that same Lincoln can donate the rear discs as well.
The kit you found seems to come w/ ss brake lines, don't buy any ill you know what calipers you be using. I had mine custom made at a hose house, for little more than 1/2 of what Superlift wanted for theirs.
