d 44 to d60

Post by hillbillyhighboy »

Hello, I have a cracked front differential housing and was told to put a Dana 60 on it instesd of replacing with another 44. I am in the beginnings of the whole off-road and mechanical experience so please bear w/ me. This means I will need everything different than the 44 right? Gears, axleshafts and so on and so forth right ? I e-mailed Currie enterprizes about a price for a brand new one. Is there a after market one that is a better value or is that the route I want to go? What would you experienced guys do? Also I recently bought a power steering conversion kit and was waiting to get the front end fixed first. But anyway, Will I need to swap out the pitman arm and draglink that came with my kit or anything to accomodate for the dana 60 I may be putting in? Thanks to all who takle the time to help me out. God Bless

Hi! I know nothing about 4x4's but all I can say is don't deal with Currie. They used to be good but things have changed. I used to live across the street and have watched them grow from a garage shop with a bunch of rear-end piles to the big commercial operation farther down the road. They've certainly gotten bigger but not necessarily better. Last year I was helping a friend with a Jeep axle and all we got from Currie were delays, excuses and bad attitude. I'm afraid I won't be going there anymore.

Heep thanks for the heads up.

Hillbilly If i were you I'd search the classifieds and local bone yards, or even just trucks around your area for the 4x4's from 77-79 I found my D60 2 blocks around the corner and picked up a complete 79F250 for a donor. Most people know what they have if they are sitting on a D60 but there is the few who just don't care and those who just don't have a clue. I've also seeen a few go through on ebay. For a complete setup you'd be lookin at 500-1500 bucks depending on the condition of the unit. As for what changes have to be made to fit this axle under your truck the only big changes are you have to rebend a few hard brake lines at the proportioning valve as u are adding disk brakes now and you need the proportioning valve that goes with the PB ( I have an extra laying around) or try the nice price of 300 bucks from a dealership, only a dealership part also.A new larger master cylinder is also needed from the 78-79. Then you'll have the rubber lines that run from the hard lines to each wheel that need to be replaced or maybey your donor axle will still have em. Extended ones can be purchased for lifted trucks from skyjacker. As far as it bolting up with your old springs it's a match. The driveshaft to the front axle will need to be shortened about 2 inches unless your lifting it it might be closer. If you have any other questions or need pics of something let me know.

i don't know much but i was told only f350 had dana 60 in the front. i have run into a few peoplw would said they had a 60 when its a 44. my buddy who works for ford said you can tell by the knokels are alot bigger then 44 and somthing else. i can't remember. but i just found this

Dana 60 front axles only came in 1-ton 4WD and very few 3/4-ton 4WD trucks. Thats why Dana 60 front axles are so rare.

this link tells alot just becareful becuse people try to pass 44 of as 60s somone tied to do it to me.

Most of the D60 is noticeably larger compared to the 44. All the 1st 3 pics are of a Hp44 and the rest are the hp60.
