NP435 - install

Post by smclaren »

Hey Guys

I am in the home stretch of my ring gear replacement.

Spent the last cople of hours trying to get that damned NP435 the last inch or so onto the bell housing. :x Bloody thing will not budge that last bit for me. Have pushed, pulled, wiggled, lowered, raised, bashed, in gear, out of gear, swore etc :hw: ... even quickly touched the starter to see if that would help the alignment (uni joint at the rear of the gear box did move). I have swiped a couple of the longer bell housing bolts to help align the gearbox to the bell housing to try and get the angles right.

I am using the horrific "gear box on the floor jack" method ... which I must say blows ! No other options I am afraid.

I am calling it quits for the day, and write this with my 3rd beer in hand .... 10 more to go !

How am I gonna get this bloody thing onto the bell housing. Any tips greaty appreciated .. especially by my girlfriend !

Sounds to me like the clutch assembly isnt properly aligned and is just barely keeping the input shaft from dropping into the pilot bushing in the crankshaft.

If you are only 1/2 inch away and the transmission is well into the throwout bearing and the bell.

Take two long bolts and thread them into the bell to keep the tranny from falling (dont tighten, just lightly thread them in there so it can fall out)

Then have someone step on the clutch, or use a bar or a pair of vice grips to move the clutch lever, while you push on the tranny with your feet. The clutch will release and the tranny should go in.

Sounds like you were slightly off with your centering, easy stuff
