Any repair suggestions for an original FM radio?

I just scored an original 1971 Truck AM-FM radio
The wires were cut of course (why do people do that??)
The bigger problem is that it has been sitting and is VERY dry & dusty inside. The buttons stick and FM slider barely moves.
I havent tried to put power to it.

Does anybody have any experience or reccomendations for someone who can do a nice rebuild on an original radio?
There is a guy on e-bay that wants $180 to rebuild a factory radio, but he says he does it right. (Which is what I want, of course)

Does anybody have any information on how the factory mounted the speakers? They couldn't have cut a big hole in doors of FM equipped trucks?
Also do the factory truck speaker grilles come on any other FoMoCo vehicle?

I am thinking that a high priced (but quailty) rebuild is what this rare bump truck artifact really deserves. It is going to quickly cost more than putting in any aftermarket system, but I do like "original".

It was that darn 'stereo' thing that makes the dash speaker obsolete and necesitates door speakers.

I cant believe that Ford made speaker grilles that were unique to the trucks. I am thinking that maybe they came from Thunderbird(?) 1966 Birds first offered stereo with the 8 track and the speakers were 'tacked on' to the door panels but I cant find a good picture of them when I need it. After that, stereos in Ford cars all had integrated door panel speaker set ups.

I have what looks like the very same radio in my 1980 Fiesta only the knobs are different. It fit my 68 Ranger face plate . I put in back in the Fiesta because I found a old Kenwood with cassette and had knobs that fit the face plate.

They made an 80s passenger car radio that looks and fits the truck faceplate but it has a slider under the tuning buttons for the R-L balance. I have seens these in trucks and on ebay.
I was surprised to see that this one actually has a truck part number. (D1TA)

Of course perhaps you could also have had a 71-2 truck FM installed in your Fiesta ?

I have a D1TA radio somewhere, also. I've seen D2TA radios, too.

I think thats the same radio that my grandfather had in his 76 dentside. I have a similar radio somewhere that came out of thier 71 LTD but I cant locate it.

Cleaning the radio up isnt difficult. The outer shell comes off and you can get to the top and bottom. You can gently blow the dust out with air. The circuit board can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol but its best to use the real stuff, not rubbing alcohol, otherwise it leaves a sticky mess. Tuner cleaner works too but its harder to find anymore since nothing has mechanical tuners anymore. There should be light grease on the tuner inside and if that dried out it wont tune right so give it a good lube job.

Youre probably safe to power it up and see if it at least works. It certainly looks ok in that regard.

That still isn't the one I remember my 71 having in it before I changed it. My dad bought her new so I know it was stock.
I remember that it did not have the slider bar. To change from AM to FM you pushed the buttons. A couple of buttons were marked AM and the rest were marked FM. I cannot remember if the dial was split but I am sure it must have been,
I pulled it on Christmas day when I was 15. I am 46 so my CRS is working pretty well. .
Good luck on your install. I read somewhere on here the other day about a company that will take you old radio and swap out the internals for brand new stuff with outputs for fancy new things.
