Hi all.
I'm new to my 72 F100 w/360 automatic. I was fine for a while, but worsening quickly... slams into reverse, slowly slips into drive. Fluids good. Does this mean I need a transmission overhaul (not that I'd attempt it). If so, any tips when going to a proshop with a vintage truck?
Thank you,
- David

On some automatic transmissions there in the passing gear sensor(overdrive sensor) there is an ajustment screw inside. All you have to do is remove the vacuum line and with a small screwdriver adjust that screw up in there and test drive it, keep doing it until you get the way you want. Try that first before you redo the transmission.

What does it do if you put it into 1st or 2nd? Does it slip then? Have you double checked the fluid level? You can adjust the modulator like was mentioned. Does it have the stock column shifter? You can adjust the band to spec but I think that is only for second gear.

There is no such thing. It is a 72 F100. F150's came in 1975 to get around some of the emission laws at the time.thethump wrote:Hi all.

Hi, and yes SideOil, it is a 72 100, my typo. (See my truck, photo C below)
It slowly slides into any forward gear, although I get a thump in 1st... it doesn't engage any dif. than 1st or 2nd. The slow to forward gear is only when its cold. I've double checked the levels warm and in park... all good.
NutnDun, everything (column) but the rear bumper & the paint is original. I banged up the rear bumper real bad trying to run over my wife... she turned out fine unfortunately and I'm still hearing about the truck constantly. I've decided to name the truck "The other woman".
RoadRunner, I did some some looking around underneath and found some interesting connections. There is a line which runs from the back of carb. to soft hose which connects to a nipple, however inside a device which the hose connects to. (See photo A below) I'm guessing the device would need to be removed to find access allowable by screw driver for the suggestion you provided. I saw some other hard lines running back... is the coolant system involved in the transmission?
Also found a wire leaving the firewall into the engine compartment. I hits some electrical device with has two vacuum lines (they happen to be hooked together with a short piece of hose. This device also sends a wire to the transmission and has a rubber connection to a prong. Have no idea what it's for. (See photo B below)

Un-related question what's the gap on points for a tuneup on my 360, and any tips on how to best to get the crank shaft rotated to catch the points at maximum distance?
Thank each of you for reading this book.

This great song mentioning a flatbed Ford was released on May 1, 1972, the band’s first single. 72 was a good year, ah yes.

Re: Slams into reverse, slowly slips into drive.
Mak'n some progress here. Something makes me wonder if there were'nt some transmission honey added before I bought it... or I'm being paranoide... toss a coin.
I got a new modulator for the transmission pulled old out, placed pin/rod into the new one and I can now get into reverse without barking the tires, still got some slam into reverse, and also into drive. Sit'n at the red at idle, push the gas a little and bam we are in gear. I'm going to try some adjustments to the modulator this weekend see how it goes.
On another question on my last post, what is this electrical wire running into the auto-transmission. Some reading here's got me thinking maybe it's a reverse switch... but if you look at the pick in the post there is some electrical device at the other end of the wire with a disabled (looped vacuum hose) connection... all of which has a wire running thru the firewall. Looking at the wiring diagrams now and remembering why I failed drafting in high school, or was it the pot. I'm half Greek and can't read it.
Gonna be 20-70% rain this weekend, depends on who you ask... I was hoping to drop some cash on a fishing licenses and go after some trout on Sunday. I might go anyway to get out of the house.

Re: Slams into reverse, slowly slips into drive.
its not a reverse switch. it looks like maybe its some sort of emmissions device. this is what i was thinking about but i don't see it on this diagram. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... ns#p252942
