diff locker confusion

Post by madmax »

First of all as a first time poster I would like to say this is a great site. I own a 1968 f100 and I have been searching for some sort of locker for this truck. I have to admit that between the powerloc, detroit locker, true loc, aussie locker and at least one or two more that I don't remember off hand, I am truely confused as which one would be the best for me. All I really want the locker for is so that I don't crippled on ice and snow in my wintery climate.

If all you want it for is ice, go with a limited slip, not a locker. Lockers have some disadvantages, especially for a short wheelbase truck. One big thing that is a negative in snow and ice is uneven power around curves, it's locking and unlocking as you go around because of the different tracks of the inner and outer wheels.

A limited slip will give you more even power distribution and will keep both wheels moving in all but extreme circumstances. It'll be easier to handle on the road.

It's for my twin boys, sure they're only 3 right now, but it's all for them! Well, and my twin girls. They're not even 1 yet, but when they are I'll have a pit crew!

So being new to these 9 inch diffs what is the best way to go, donor truck with limited slip or converting the one I have?

I prefer putting a new limited slip in the existing axle, but they are spendy. You run the risk of having the discs worn out in a donor axle, but if you can find a good one, go for it.

Working on axles isn't as scary as it seems, but you do need a good micrometer and guage, and take your time taking it apart and putting it back together.
