AOD behind an FE

Post by mikeconner1 »

Anybody done this? What did you use to adapt the bell housing? What flexplate did you use? How did you activate the locking converter? What are the pitfalls? I'm trying to decide if I want to pursue this, or just build a C-6, but I like the idea of the extra gears for highway use/interstate driving.

What yall think?

A AOD would will not hold good, a E4OD made after 94 would be a better choice. I don't like ether, and a E4OD you will have electronic control issues. a C6 you can mod it to have the lower gear ratio of the E4OD for 1st and 2nd, and put a higher rear ratio. I am not a fan of automatics so I can't give you a good advice. if you want a manual you can go with a RUG, RTS, or some other toploader that is a 3 speed with od

Allow me to expose my ignorance and ask about the two top loaders. What would you find those units in? Are they 4 or 5 speed transmissions? Hadn't considered a manual, but it is an option to get the interstate gearing I'm looking for. Are those units direct fit to the block, or am I dreaming about Chevrolet?

here are 3 different one and the bottom one might be the best one. the top one is a 3 speed with separate od and the other two are a 4 speed where 4th is od. the one in the center has a tail housing for a transfer. the top one has the correct bell housing but all of these have removable bells
edit: I think the second is a solenoid od

Don't put an AOD behind any sort of real engine. They have overdrive and lockup and they are completely hydraulic, there's no electric lockup control. The tranny locks the converter in 3rd and 4th dependant on throttle.

AOD overdrive is very, very weak. Take one apart and figure out how they work then it'll become very clear that the AOD in stock form is not a performance transmission whatsoever in stock form. If you do some serious and expensive mods you can make one a pretty tough overdrive auto, but you'll lose lockup which is pretty important for mileage.

the first two adds are a Borg-Warner T-85 or T-86 three speed with a R11 or R10 solenoid overdrive unit.

I will be using the C6 with the gear vendors under/over aux trans and get the over drive. Putting a 95' F350 EFI motor in my 72 and not using the E40D. For a couple reasone, cant hook an NP205 to the E40D (could but will have probs with clearance issues)... I dont want to mess with the steering column linkage (currently small block C6 on the 390)... or speedo (the speedo on the newer F350 comes off the toner ring in the rear axle, although engine might need to run right???)

Why doesn't an NP205 bolt right to an E4OD with a flange notch like every other 31 spline ford tranny?

86-91.5 trucks just run ABS off the tone ring. The speedo, ABS and cruise run off the tone ring in 91.5+ trucks. I'm not sure, but the gas engines may use the tone signal as a replacement for the VSS feed to the EEC. VSS in the pre-91.5 trucks was used to let the EEC know the vehicle was moving so it would shut fueling to zero under engine braking situations. If you lose VSS in a pre-91 ford you'll have low and erratic idle issues.

The C6/gearvendors gets you a really long, complex and expensive 4 speed non-lockup overdrive auto.

I would shell out the bucks to build a bulletproof E4OD and an aftermarket controller before buying a GV.

supposedly the linkage of the 205 will hit the trans...I also heard the front drive shaft might hit.

I wasn't aware of gear vendor, that stuff is cool. expensive as hell, but still cool.

I'm wondering if a planetary/sun gear change in the final drive of the C6 would be enough to give me the road gear I'm looking for? Going to continue to look for the BW T85 or 86 since they are a direct bolt up and would work with my column shift that's now in place.

Where would one find the different ratio gearing for the C6?

Mouse, are you saying that the final drive assemblies are interchangeable? Getting ready to delve into Bad Shoe's DVD on the C6, and I've had them apart, just never rebuilt one, and he may cover that in his video, but just wondering exactly what you're saying with "E4OD"

You can't change the final drive. Overdrive autos have extra planets to achieve overdrive. 3rd gear in a direct auto doesn't have a planet, it's straight through.

The E4OD is Fords first attempt at an electronic overdrive auto. They're OK, but take lots of work to make good, some parts interchange with C6 stuff, but nothing overdrive related.

the sun gear, forward hub and planet set will intercange from a E4OD, changeing 1st and 2nd from 2.46/1.46 to 2.71/1.54.
