Speaker Location

Post by mike_68 »

I'm ready to patch the body and paint my 68 F250 and need to make decisions about the speaker locations. The doors have these existing holes (see attachments) that I've got to patch up if I don't want the new ones to go there as well.

Questions:
1. Is this the best location for speakers?
2. If left here in the door, how do you keep the wire from getting pinched/bound in the hinges?

Probably also need to think about moisture resistant speakers if you decide install them into the doors.

I plan to mount a dual front speaker from LMC in the stock in dash location. $42.95.
Do you have the in cab tank? If not you could build a speaker box back there and mount your speakers in it.

I'm going to be mounting a pair of 6x9's in the same location. But as mentioned, you'll have to take some precautions to keep moisture and dust from ruining them. I was planning on just cutting some inexpensive plastic sheeting and fabricating a moisture barrier.

As for the wires, you can either just tape or zip-tie them to the hinges, or do what I plan to do. I can't remember what they're called, but you know how newer cars with all the electric stuff in the doors have a tube which extends from the door to the door pillar. Some are a solid tube, some are more like a rubber bellows, and some are more like a spring. I haven't actually set down and figured out which style would be best, but I do plan on getting something along those lines to use, since it'll both hide and protect the wires. I'll also install some heat-shrink tubing around the wires to bulk them up a bit and and hopefully make them last a little longer.

Here are several photos of mine. I used some insulating batting on the doors and put the holes in the usual location. You just have to be very careful that you get it right. Also, be careful you don't do it backwards!

I did mine like so:
http://fordification.com/forum/viewtopi ... highlight=
They look good and match the rest of the interior. I just need to do the back doors and put a bigass amp and woofer under the toolbox to blow away the kids with some old Dwight Yoakam.
Oh yeah, the speakers are 4 way Pioneers. They handle plenty of power without distortion and Paul Harvey sounds great on them.
I did the Volvo Metro dash radio thing swap and the cd player fits nice, Painted it silver so it almost matches.

Another option I have not heard mentioned yet is to install Marine speakers. They are already set up for a high moisture environment.

Crutchfield has a fairly good selection.

I call that tubing conduit. Makes me wonder if that is right or not...
