Drain Transmission to install cable?

Post by Lar4t9r »

My 1969 F 100 did not have a speedometer cable in it when I got it. I now have a cable assembly, but need to know if i have to drain the transmission fluid to install the cable on the tranny side. The old end is in the trans and has the clamp type retainer. It has a rubber cap over the end of it and when I pulled that off, some tranny fluid ran out so I pushed it back on. I did a search here but could not find an answer. Any help would be appreciated.

You don't have to drain trans to replace cable but you will lose a little fluid when doing it.Just have some cardboard laying under truck and some rags handy.

:yt: It may also help to park the truck with the drivers side uphill to keep the lost fluid to a minimum. I would route it in and have it ready to pull the old stub out and put the new cable right back.

Well I got it installed easy enough. But when I pulled the stub out of the trans, I found the nylon gear was chewed, so obviously, I need a new one before it will work. Always something...

count the teeth before getting a new one. the tooth count is what makes your speedo read correctly. unless you have different sized tires than stock size then you need to do a calculation to figure the number of teeth you need to get it to read right.

Yes, I knew that Fordman. Stock tire size and rearend. My C4 tranny uses a 16 tooth gear. Already ordered one.

You are right, sir! With that in mind, here is a site that provides formula for the gears, and you can buy the correct one for your transmission.

http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInf ... _gears.asp

Ford gears at at the bottom of this page. Once you determine which gear is correct for your application, you can click on a link for the part number and buy the gear. There are other sites out there, this just happened to be a link I had saved.
