Re: best tranny?
That's about my opinion on those manuals too. I would go to them when I was having a problem getting something apart and it would just say remove...or reverse procedure to install. My old 75 Motors manual even has the valve adjust sequence for an FE engine wrong. I do use it for specs though.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Re: best tranny?
So i was thinking about this again and have done a bit more research. Im now wandering what the update to the e4od added and the same for the 4r100. Other then the od and electric shift control i dont see a big difference. Are they any stronger? I have seen a few sites claming 270000+ miles. Are those numbers practical or not? I would like the od as i will spend a bit of time on the interstate on a regular bases. Home Depot is the next town over.

Re: best tranny?
I started doing more research on this and now I'm back to wanting an E40D in my 68 F250. I REALLY want an overdrive but i also want a heavy duty tranny that isn't going to burn out when I tow for 200 miles. In southern CA there are lots of continous steep grades and towing up them takes a toll on equipment. I found a site: http://www.becontrols.com/products/products.htm that has an electronic controller for the E40D for $400. Then you need a wiring harness for another $125. They have lots of info on their site about all of the various ford trannys and swap info. I'm still looking for a good deal on a conversion plate that would allow the E40D to bolt up to my 390. It looks like the rear cross member would have to be moved back 2-3" to make the swap. I'm not sure on the driveshaft mod yet.

Re: best tranny?
Yes, I've seen that one. Looks like a quality product. I contacted them and they said that they can provide the proper flywheel to work with the E40D. Just have to find an E40D from a 'small block' and it should bolt up with that adapter. I am seriously considering this swap the price would probably be less for the complete swap than to buy an overdrive unit for my C6. The E40D would be a better answer for what I am looking for (driveability, economy and durability). Besides that my C6 is pretty tired to start with so if I put an OD on it, I'd need to rebuild it at the same time. Now I'm looking for a used E40D with the small block bolt pattern, trying to find one locally.

So I found a donor E4OD locally. Going to pick it up next week, it is a in need of a rebuild, but thats what I wanted. I plan to rebuild it myself (I know, I know). Once I get it and start on the build and swap I'll start a new thread and post the details. Should be an adventure to get it rebuilt and put behind my freshly rebuilt 390 and working in the '68 F250.
