67 F-100 backfiring
Ok here's the story, I have a 67 F-100 I picked up a while back that needed a carb rebuild. I put a brand new Holley 4160, new coil, plugs/wires, and Pertronix ignition. Started right up, idled great. Drove it around for a few miles and it had a flat spot and backfired pretty bad during acceleration. I fiddled with the timing and it still did it. I had some electrical issues so the truck sat for a month or so while I got that sorted out. So today I start it up, starts up fine and idles good. I drove it about a block and it starts backfiring like crazy, couldnt even drive it. Kept stalling out so I ended up pushing it back. I redid the timing a couple of times but I cant get it started now. It back fires real bad and the carb caught on fire. I tried doing the timing several times and there isn't any change, it just back fires and spits gas up out the carb. Any ideas?

Re: 67 F-100 backfiring
oddball, i have seen a few things that can cause odd backfiring. Ignition timing is usually the culprit, but i have seen it caused by broken valve springs, flat cam lobe, faulty ignition modules or skipped timing chain. You said you put a pertronix ignition in, is it a whole new distributor or just a points eliminator kit? The stock ford distributor shafts are notorious for wearing out, due to poor top end oil circulation and that will cause your truck to run poorly no matter what you do.

Its the points eliminator. I think the distributor is ok, there isn't any slop in the shaft. The truck ran great before I replaced all that stuff, except for some minor carb flooding. Im hoping its just the timing. The thing about the Pertronix is that little ground strap/jumper wire is a bit loose. I stripped the slots of the Philips screw because it wouldn't tighten all the way down, I cant get it out either.

try a small pair of visegrips to get the screw out. if you can fix that then it will probably work great. I have heard great things about the pertronix ignition. I have a accel points eliminator kit and i love it. If that doesnt change the running issue, always go back to the last thing you changed, so i guess try the points again.
