How fast does a stock 360 like to spin? 4,000 RPM or less?

Post by robroy »

Good evening,

Does anybody happen to know approximately how fast a stock 360 likes to spin (before there's no point in going higher)? Is it 4,000 RPM or even lower, like 3,250 RPM?

I'm trying to combine my memory of what my truck was like with its stock 360 with knowledge of gear ratios to pick out the right transmission. My new engine revs happy to 5,500 to 6,000 RPM so I'm sure it will be different.

Thanks!

When I floor my stock 390 with a C6 is shifts at 4 grand, I haven't had it any higher than that.

IIRC something just north of 3500 is where it gets pointless to rev higher.

Corbin and Robert, thanks for the replies!

Based on this, I think that the gearing implications of having a motor that happily spins to 5,500 to 6,000 RPM would be quite different than for a motor that rarely spins past 3,500. This should mean that the faster spinning motor should make better use of lower gears, like 3.09:1 first gear instead of a 2.41:1 first gear, right?

Thanks again!

Yeah if you have a higher RPM engine than you can stay in each gear longer and you can have a lower first gear to launch faster.

When im really romping on my 352 i usually dont shift from 2nd to 3rd until about 4100 roughly and the same from 3rd to 4th. and thats right on the edge before i lose power. 3600-4200 is about ideal. no need to go any higher. you will notice a major drop in power and start floating valves

I don't know but my 390 has buried the peg before, with 3.73 gears. That has to be past 4 grand.
