I was just looking up info and came across this opinion.... The primary function of the factory windage tray, shown here installed on our engine, is to keep the extra quart of oil in the pan away from the spinning crank. I do not think that I've ever actually seen a copy, but it is said that there is a factory technical service bulletin which says this as well.
