shot craps with my c6 and lost

Post by mouse »

today since its been raining I thought I have been losing traction at stops and it got more frequent(it shifted good). I made a 13 mile trip on the highway without a problem and when I started to head back it decided to shift out of gear on its own. since I was at a stop before getting back on the highway I checked to see if I was dumping fluid which I wasn't, so I proceeded 4 miles then no gears. I coasted off the first off ramp and stop, by the time I got out it was a geysers and a lake of trany fluid. shut it off and it stop pouring out from some wear around the front pump. I will look in to it more tomorrow  :? I out ran 1 bullet but not 2

Sorry to hear about that...sucky feeling. Unfortunately been there, done that. Mine was in my first 70 I owned back in 1986...had to replace the transmission. I did get to change it from 3 on tree to 4 on floor though.

Good luck.

sounds like the front pump seal failed. hopefully it didn't burn up the clutches. and you can just replace the seal.

should the trany be able slip out without taking out the center cross member on a 71 f250 2wd or is my cab sitting to low? the last person to take the trany out rounded every nut on the torque converter, what fun

IF YOU LOST ALL MOVEMENT IN THE TRUCK AND THEN STARTED LEAKING FLUID FROM THE FRONT, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOURE PUMP CHECKED OUT, AND BLEW A FRONT SEAL. i HAD MY FRONT PUMP IN MY C6 GRENADE ON ME AND I LOST ALL GEARS. IF YOU PULL THE PUMP ASSEMBLY OUT OF THE FRONT OF THE TRANSMISSION, YOU CAN PULL THE STATOR HOUSING OFF OF THE PUMP, INSIDE WILL BE THE GEROTOR OIL PUMP. CHECK THE GEARS FOR CRACKS OR BROKEN TEETH AND CHECK THE INSIDE OF THE PUMP HOUSING AS IT IS ALUMINUM AND WILL BE SCORED IF SOMETHING WENT WRONG. HOPEFULLY NOT BUT THAT WAS MY CASE. GOOD LUCK. OK THE INTERMEDIATE BAND ADJUSTMENT IS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE TRANS, LOOSEN THE LOCK NUT, LOOSEN THE ADJUSTING SCREW JUST A LITTLE. TORQUE THE ADJUSTING SCREW TO 10 FT LBS. THEN BACK OUT THE ADJUSTING SCREW EXACTLY 1 1/2 TURNS. THEN, HOLDING THE ADJUSTING SCREW, TIGHTEN THE LOCKNUT DOWN TO 35-45 FT LBS. BUT, PLEASE TELL ME THOSE PARTS WERE NOT IN THE TRANS OIL PAN, BECAUSE IF THEY WERE THAT BAND ADJUSTMENT ISN'T GOING TO HELP. SOME OF THOSE PARTS LOOK LIKE THE ROLLER BEARING PARTS FROM THE OVERRUNNING CLUTCH ASSEMBLY WAY BACK INSIDE THE TRANS. WRITE ME BACK, LET ME KNOW. i JUST REBUILT MY C6 LAST WEEK, SO SOME OF THIS IS PRETTY FRESH TO ME.

ok, if those parts were inside the bellhousing, is it possible that those 3 round pieces are the trans, block locating dowels? i cant really tell very well through the pictures. Since you've already got the trans out, you might as well go rebuild it or have it rebuilt. That way at least youll find out what the problem was. the picture of the inside of the pan looked pretty dirty, that will be in the valve body too. When my trans blew it was just the pump, but i ended up rebuilding the whole thing anyways, because you never know what other kind of damage there may be. C6's are pretty simple though. if you get a manual, you can do it yourself and save alot of money.

after cleaning the trany and inspecting the front pump I haven't found anything wrong yet nor the source of the leak but two places with rtv

those three dowels where lay in shaving and are about 6mm. I could probably rebuild this with out a book but I did have a lap top with alldata on it that just got stolen, a c6 is simple compared to aods and 700r4 that I have rebuilt. so I am going to keep digging

The three little rollers came from a busted starter drive sometime in the past. no big deal.

There should be a plug in that hole behind the wad of silicone. also no big deal. There is no pressure there and it couldn't have leaked more than a drop or two since the trans was built.

Can't tell what the blurry chunk is.
