Will RUG J2 4-Speed fit?

Post by 67Phord »

I have been tracking the abovementioned transmission on eBay for a bit now, but was wondering how much of a job to change over? It is originally out of a 390 Mustang, 14" tailshaft, 28 spline output.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks

I want to change out the 3 speed manual currently behind the 390 in my '67.

You'll simply need to find a car-type bellhousing, since the truck bellhousing you have now is 1/2" too deep.

I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that there was a toploader 4-speed that had the same input shaft length as the 3 speed. Maybe a pressure plate change or some slight modification of the snout, but still almost a bolt-in. I'm sorry to keep beating on this, but I have to buy a transmission anyway and want to get the best one.

As mentioned, the truck FE bellhousing is 1/2" to 7/16" deeper than the car FE bellhousing. This means any FE car manual tranny (Toploader included) will have a problem with it's input nose engaging into the pilot shaft. However, there's a way around this. Instead of using an FE tranny, use the small block trannies (Toploader included). They all have a longer input nose and it engages perfectly.

If you're wanting to use a car-type Toploader 4-speed transmission in your FE-powered truck, you can either use your original truck bellhousing (C5TA-B or equivalent) and use a small-block Toploader (which has a 1/2"-longer input shaft), or find a car-type FE bellhousing (C6OA-D or equivalent) to use the big-block Toploader.

Actually, I think the small block Toploader would be a better match for a truck because it's a wide ratio with a lower 1st compared to the big block Toploader. Plus, the truck bellhousing takes the bigger 11 1/2" clutch compared to the 11" car bell.

Thank you so much. As an engineer, this is the type of detailed information I like. The tranny I was eyeballing won't work, but there are several others on eBay I can look at. Thanks again.
