fixed but not
couple weeks ago my starter went out and the drive got stuck the truck crunk and the flywheel got chewed up. i put a new flywheel on it and a new starter it works great but now when i put it in gear and give it some gas i hear this noise its kind of a ticking or tapping its kind of quick and it goes up and down with engine speed. the tranny shifts fine and it drives fine. the new flywheel looked pretty much exactly like the old one when held next to it and they r both the same size and tooth count. Any ideas as to what this might be?

Re: fixed but not
Could be a number of things. Since you say the noise started only after replacing the flywheel, then I'd start checking bolts to make sure everything's tight. Did you put thick washers under the bolt heads? If so, then the head of the bolt might be sticking out too far and contacting something. I guess I'd just start looking for bolt heads or anything else that appears to have had recent metal-to-metal contact with something else.

Re: fixed but not
Just a thought but maybe the pull in windings of the starter are bad and its not pulling the gear back in all the way or not keeping it there and when you give it gas it vibrates out and contacs the flywheel. You could take your inspection plate off and crawl under there and have someone rev it up and look at what the starter is doing or you might be able to find the problem that way if its not the starter. Just a guess.

dust cover ?
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Re: fixed but not
it only does it when in gear or at least its only loud enough i can hear it when in gear.
i dont have a dust cover.
the starters new so hopefully its not the problem.

Re: fixed but not
my thoughts are that the torque converter botls are ticking when they are hitting the spacer plate / engine plate. did you get the flywheel on the correct way? backwards maybe and pulling the botls closer to the engine plate?

Re: fixed but not
im pretty sure i put it on jus like the old one came off. i did put new nylock nuts on the torque converter studs so maybe theyre too big i dont remember now but im pretty sure they dont stick off the end of the converter studs.

Re: fixed but not
now that i think about it the imbalance weight looked like it was a little taller than the one on the old flywheel. if it was on the converter side it wouldn't matter but if its on the engine side it may be hitting the motor plate

Re: fixed but not
now that it has ran some get under it and turn the flywheel around and see if you can see any scrap marks on anything.

Re: fixed but not
wooohooo!! got it fixed. there was a bend at the bottom of the engine plate and the counter weight was barely tappin it so for now i shimmed the bottm of it with a washer it doesnt seem to be hitting it anywhere else so im not gonna worry about it. Thanks for all of yalls help!
