Post by bshackelford711 »

does anyone know about how much it would cost to have a 69 F-100 grilled chromed and then all of the molding down the side done?

I have a 69 Ranger so it has the aluminum down the middle and on the bottom of the body.

I am looking into ideas for the extior of my truck and then i thought i relly like chrome.

Thanks

I am going to paint the truck black. So that would go along perfect with my paint.

As far as I know, you can't crome aluminum. It can only be polished.

You can chrome plate aluminum, but it's a slightly different process. Not all shops will do that, and of course it's going to add to the expense. I'll be interested to see what sort of figures you get!

I restored a 1963 Galaxie 500 that had polished aluminum on the sides, (and lots of it) and I found that cleaning the trim with Brasso, then wiping down with clear water, then polishing it with Mothers Metal & Chrome polish (with a buffer if possible) then, spraying it with Rustoleum Clear Coat, will make it look better than you can imagine. The clear adds a great reflective coat, much like the plating would, and you can do it piece by piece in your own shop. Total investment might be $25.00 plus a buffer & pad.

Bob: I was just curious how well the polishing would stand up to the test of time out in the elements. Your Galaxie is a beaut, but I'd guess it's probably inside a garage and/or under a car cover a lot, right? I wonder how well your methods would last for a daily driver which rarely sees the inside of a garage.

Actually the Galaxie sat outside all it's restored life. I did the "chrome" in 2004, and it went thru the winter and 100 degree summer just fine. I did not own a car cover at the time, just got one for the little Ghia (cause it's a rag top). The two car garage you see will probably never hold a car.....
