351W hp.

Post by blgold »

I am planing on building a naturally asperated, 351W stroked out to 408. Edlebrock heads and intake, and a pretty big cam. I was wondering what kind of HP I could exspect from that engine. I am hoping for 450-500 Hp.

425-450 would be a good guess for liveable street operation. I'm sure that on a dyno, at a higher rpm some magazine can get 500 hp.

I could live with 425. This will be a weekend driver anyways. Now I just need to find one.

Ain't hard to find, can't give one away hardly. I've got a complete good running efi 5.8 on C-list for a buck fifty and not a single call.
BTW, you can find horsepower calculators on the internet.

yeah, I'm sure there are but at the moment, I am in Iraq and its kinda hard. Most people don't wanna ship one and if they did it would be more than the price of the engine. I only get 2 weeks of leave this yr and dought the old lady will wanna drive all over the place to get an engine. Would be really nice to find one just down the road in MO.

I bored and stroked a 351W to a 396 and it's got 457hp and 483 ft/lbs. with 400+ ft/lbs. from 2500 to I think 5000 RPM (can't remember off hand the top of the range)? Real flat torque curve and should vaporize tires for sure with a 3.89 geared Trac-Loc 9" mounted with a coil over 4-link! :D
I used Edelbrock's RPM heads, an air-gap intake, and ARP studs throughout.

Thats about what I'm looking for. I have a 428CJ engine setting in the shop but was wanting to save that for a mustang project for my wife( ME mostly). I wanna go totally sleeper on this truck so anything that gets done has to be either hiden or look fairly normal to the unsuspecting eye. so I'm not to sure on the coil overs and 4 link but 450hp and some good new springs and good compound tires will work nice. going to lower it a bit so I will be able to hide some stuff but not alot.

The above mentioned is in my '56. My bump has a 390 and is otherwise pretty stock. Good luck with your projects!

My brothers got a 351 out in his garage that I pulled my tranny off of. I'd bet with his new baby he'd be willing to part with it where at in MO he's in Forsyth.

I'm in Iraq right now but my dad lives south of springfield in a little town called crane missouri. If he wants to let if go let me know and maybe we can work something out. I really want a 351W for this truck. Had one before and that thing would run forever on the top end.

In my experiance making more than one horsepower per cubic inch is the point at which the horsepower really starts to cost money. I would say at ~400 cubic inches 450HP is about where it is going to start getting a little high strung. High strung isn't much fun for more than a play thing and even then it can still get irritating.

I talked to my bro last night and he said just make him an offer on it. Also if it'd be better I can bring it up here to Springfield for you so you don't have to travel to Forsyth.
