this should be the same output shaft for the 4x4 and 4x2 correct? meaning the tail of the trans would be same, as the 4x4 uses a divorced transfer case. i am looking at a 71 4x4 for the 360 sp to put in my 66 4x2. this should swap over directly, right?

A 71 F100 should be a married transfer case. The F250 used the divorced but the tailhousing had a provision for the transfer case shifter, otherwise the same though.

so can i use the 4x4 trans in a 4x2 application? or do i need to swap tailshafts and is that a fairly simple operation?

i think he is saying that you cant use the married transmission in a 2wd. i know on a divorce trans you can just swap the tailshaft and tailhousing to make it a 2wd trans.
