Who would reuse this axle?

yea it has the wear on the axle also. i suppose it could be welded and machined. but that is a chance of weakingthe metal through metal fatigue even more.

Seen that a few times myself. I've stuck them right back in when customers didn't care to pay for a new axle. Never had one come back.

Axles are too plentiful for me to knowingly trust my trips to a damaged one. I'd try to replace if I could round up money for an axle.

Same here-seen it a lot but never had a broken axle come in that had the torch marks on it. I surely wouldn't use it for high hp or heavy hauling though.

Nobody has answered the second part. I need a short shaft for a 9" ford in Houston. Surely somebody has one lying around.

i don't have any parts rearends. and i'm no where near houston. maybe a parts wanted ad might get more readers.

It's probably still stronger than the other end-unless you have 31 spline axles. It probably would run a long time....but it is a drag to have your wheel sticking 3' outside the fender.

Somebody was a real hack with that torch. I've cut a lot of old bearing races off without damaging the shaft.

Our truck's rearends don't have a long/short axle shaft....they're both the same length: 29-7/8"

Just out of curiosity, are you in the habit of removing the bearings from broken axles stubs to check? The damage was under his bearing and if an axle broke the retainer is destroyed (even when the axle does not come out) so you normally would not remove teh bearing to see so I really wonder if you checked them all to be able to make that statement. Yes, whenever something is broke I do inspect the fractured part and I'm sure I would see it broke where there was prior damage. I always want to know why something failed and will disassemble it too if I need to satisfy any curiosity. It's very rare to see one broke off at the bearing for any reason in a general repair shop. I have also witnessed axles with a lot more severe torch damage than that which were still in service. Keep in mind some of us have wrenched in very remote locations, just couldn't run to the parts counter, and we had to make work with what we had. I even mixed ring and pinions from different sets once when I was working in a camp above the Arctic Circle because it's all we had. And it worked, the truck was still going after several months in pretty severe service, when I left. But everyone who thinks they know will tell you that you can't do that.
