New rear axle? or not?
right now I have a dana 60 with 3.54 gears. I am getting the things together to do my turbo diesel project. I want to know what you guys think I should get as far as a new rear end or just leave it. (remember that the turbo diesel is expect 750 hp_)

Ford 9 inch is not bigger than a D60

Re: New rear axle? or not?
so you want to know if the 3.54 will handle the horsepower of that diesel? it probably will. the dana is possibly stronger than the 9 " though. also your gear size will depend on what you are going to do with the truck. just cruise in it or drag race.

mostly cruising, but if I do lay into it, I don't want it to break.

Re: New rear axle? or not?
Peak turbodiesel torque is typically 2.2 times peak HP as a general rule. Not sure what engine you plan to make that power with, what transmission you expect not to scatter behind that but it's a sure bet that a dana 60 will not hold anywhere near that power with any iota of traction. Dana 70's won't come close to that, an 80 would hold a little while depending on traction.
Your frame and suspension won't handle that power. Take a look at a Peterbilt frame and chassis to see what it takes to handle 1500 lb/ft of torque.
Your truck would be a rocket with 250 turbodiesel HP.

Re: New rear axle? or not?
my bad, I meant 750 lbs/torque. I got me a 7.3 international, going to be set up with a twin turbo setup off of a CAT engine and swapping the indirect injectors with the electronic direct injectors (basically a powerstroke)...I am reinforcing the entire chassis with 1/4 steel. The F250 has sooo many beefy parts, I am hoping to not need any upgrades on springs..etc.

Re: New rear axle? or not?
well I guess it's a good thing I got all of my ideas from a head diesel mechanic at a very well know truck shop. oh yeah and he is getting me most of the parts for free hundred dollars. and since he is going to be doing most of the work on the motor and has told me that the motor is bulletproof, I will take his opinion.
thanks for the so welcomed opinion again average250.
oh yeah, and sorry for not being sooo thorough with my exact plans.

Re: New rear axle? or not?
From what little I know, I am with Dustin, I wouldn't waste my money on the 7.3 or the PS when you can make a 12 valve cummins that will spank it bad and hold together with a lot less effort (read money)

Re: New rear axle? or not?
I had a DRW 10.25 on Craigslist for about 6 months. I couldn't give it away. I scrapped it about a year ago. Not saying they aren't good. Just saying the don't seem to be worth much. Probably because they are so common.

Re: New rear axle? or not?
Yeah i agree with Dustin aswell. I work on Ford diesels all day long and if I were to put a diesel in one of my trucks it would be a Cummins 6 bt. The powerstrokes make their power very high in the RPM range and Cummins makes more of it and low where you need it when towing. Of the Ford diesels my favorite is the 7.3, its a good motor, I have seen them come in with over 500,000 on the ticker. Just stay away from the 6.0, don't ever get a 6.0. Never ever get a 6.0.

Honestly, I really would rather push a Ford than drive a Chevy.

Re: New rear axle? or not?
I don't do any towing, what I like about diesel is their ability to last soo long, and 40% better fuel mileage (on average). I like cummins but where I live, there is not a lot of them. When I was looking for my diesel, the only cummins I found was 4000 dollars, which my wife would kill me if I did that. When I was planning my project, I wanted to keep it as much Ford as possible, basically outfit an old truck with new technology. I know the 6.0's are crap, and the 6.9 (in my area) are rare to find. 7.3's are more common and easier to get parts for.
The only thing I don't like about this website is how a simple topic can get changed by one person who wants to express their discontent and badger people for some reason.
