suggestions

Post by hotrod ford »

guys i need some advice. i bought me a shrtbed awile back. it came with a stock 360. i have a 429/c6 also. my thing is, i don't want to put so much money into the 429 when i could improve the looks of the truck. the 429 would be nice though, but its not like i'm going to the track. eventually i would like to have the truck completly stock. i will be home in a few weeks to look the truck over and to see what it realy needs. i have gotten a couple of thing already thanks to some of you guys. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks, hotrod

turn the 360 into a 390. I see no reason to do any more...

:hmm: a 390 would be plenty for what i want and if i turned back into stock it wouldn't be as much work like changing an engine and mounts and drivetrain.

I thought I saved your email address. I was going to sent some pics of the 72 that I did over last summer.
Mostly stock with a mustang S code 4 barrel intake, Holley and chrome air cleaner. Nothing fancy but looked(and ran) real good.

If you have the 429 I say go for it. If you start rebuilding the 360 you will have the price of a modest paint job into it and more if you upgrade anything. so use the 429 and spend the money elsewhere.

thats true, but if i sell the 429 i could use it for the 360. carb, intake, maybe new dist. it already has headers on it. going with it i won't have to buy mounts and headers for the 429. i don't know  !

:yt:

You would have to spend a lot of money on a 360 to get it to perform any where near what a stock 429 will (unless it's a 1972 429). :2cents:

i wasn't trying to get it as strong as the 429. just somthing to have a good time in. my overall priority is to have the body and chassis in really nice shape. i have seen to many guys fix up the eng and and skimp on the body. they keep the vehicle primered for almost forever. i would really like for it to keep its stock looks. also what is the deal with the 72 429?

what's the 429/C6 out of?? You know it's history?
Is it a long tail shaft C6 from a car? Now you'll need a custom drive shaft, plus the headers, plus the mounts.
Probably cost more to properly convert to the 429 set-up than keeping and rebuilding the 360/390.
Not to mention the 390 is the right engine for the truck. Maybe I'm just biased as I'm a FE fan....

i know that it is out of a 72 galaxie. it is all stock and has never been rebuilt, but still in good shape. i'm leaning very much into using the 360 just for the customizing factor for the 429. i know i will be missing alot of fun but think it will be worth it in the long run.

good question :dk:
72 is when emissions crap started and hp went from 320hp down to 212hp. Torque went from 480 ft.lbs down to 327ft.lbs
Compression went from 10.5:1 on a 2V, 11:1 on 4V down to 8.5:1
your 360 has better numbers than that...

The 429 is also 100 LBS heavier that the 360. I'd say keep the FE and you'll be happier.

The 72 429 has the worst 385 series heads ever made the D2VE's. I vote keep the 360. It'll do just fine and won't cost a dime to put in the truck since it's already there. If you had a thunderjet 360HP 429 or an early lincoln 460 I might say go for it, but there is no reason to put any effort or money into a 72 429 (or any 71 and later 429 for that matter).

Does Ford really claim 480 lb/ft of torque for a thunderjet 429 convincor? I'd say a bit of wishful thinking on that one.
