ok, so how much better is the ford electronic ignition than the "points" set up. More power, better economy? Since I cant sell my truck,(apparently there is not strong demand for 72 fords here :lol: ) I am still using it but it seems like it has no giddy up & go (been that way since i had it) but I have a '76 360 sitting in the garage with the factory electronic ignition (and not beat as hard) which is trying to convince me to put it in the old truck. I keep telling it NO, not until i know it is worth it. Sooo.. is it worth it?

i know it will save having to adjust the points more often. i don't know what it would have to do with economy. you wouldn't have to swap the engine just the dist and the wiring for it all.

If your truck has no get up and go, try advancing the timing to at least 10 before TDC.

Had the Petronix in mine for awhile now, can't complain.
From the forum the "brain box" swap is pretty easy.
And should give you a hotter spark for more fuel economy.

How heavy is that dump bed? My 69 F350 Flat bed dually weighed 6100 unloaded and with 4.10s and the 360 it was no race car but it ran good. It ran so good that the guy that had it before me hauled trees with it. One time he had to remove a stumps and could not pull it out of the ground. They hooked a F150 to the chain wrapped around the stump and dragged the F150 to the stump backwards while idling in first in the F350. The replacement 2100 autolite carb got better mileage but no better power than the original 69 rebuilt carb.

Ever replace the timing chain and check the mechanical advance?

I would take a look at MSD. If you take the distributor out of that '76, you can use it with the MSD set up, and the stuff plugs right into the distributor. Not saying you wouldn't have to do some wiring, but its pretty simple. Firing that spark plug three times per compression is the stuff, and will give you a very noticeable pick up and improve mileage (provided you can keep your foot out of it, which I can't, if it runs fast, then so do I).

even a Mallory 6AL works good too. I have had both. Just a matter of opinion.....

I built my 67's 300 six with a durspark and MSD 6A. The truck was very powerful and reliable and extremly easy to wire. I went with the petronix stock replacment unit on my 69's 360. Never had a problem with it. I left it in the engine when I junked the old 360 :( I would recomend the petrox again and again.

I have a Mallory HyFire on my 390 ,still uses points but they last a long time. Only have adjust for point gap, simple hookup uses stock coil but must have 12 volts to it all the time,bypass resitor wire. Puts out a hot spark,will start a badly flooded engine. Have had on for over 18yrs. no problems

That was a fairly simple amplifier and by reducing the voltage from 12 to 3 volts across the points it did make the points last. As long as the rubbing block stayed intact. As the points opened a transistor dropped the 12 volts that it fed to the coil and the coil fired. Because a transistor switch is so much faster than the points switching it made for sharper rise times in the coil and longer dwell times. We ran the hyfire without the capacitor in the dizzy as it was not needed to tune to the coil.

But any points eliminator does the same thing without the mechanical wear of the points rubbing block.
