Axle ID?
My vin plate for my 70 f100 is missing the info for the axle. Is there another way of IDing what axle and what gears were used? I have to be able to communicate it to my wife who isn't mechanically inclined.

I will bet teh number is there but you do not recognize it as such. Very often the way teh numbers were stamped they do not appear where they belong. The only numbers that are normally missing are DSO and paint but those are both rare and unusual situations. Post all of the numbers that are on the plate and I will bet we can convert it to usefull info and find what you are looking for. Hawkrod

Re: Axle ID?
Ok so my wife went and rechecked. The axle code is 17 which doesn't match up for any of the codes listed in the vin decoding in the tech articles here. Is there one that was missed or what?
The full plate reads: f10ykj10910
131 B F103 V 4 G 17
04500 170 4100 61

Re: Axle ID?
I just looked through the tech articles and it seams that '70 was the only year not to use the code 17. The door panels seam to match up perfectly and paint is an exact match so i don't think that they were changed. Did ford have used the old code system for part of the year?

Re: Axle ID?
since yours is a late 70 then you have a 3.25 rearend. it makes sence that the number 17 is for all 3.25 and it doesnt say that in 70 . so you have to use the 71 axle code which is a 3.25
