3 Spd Manual to 4 Spd Auto swap?

Post by dmichel123 »

What would be the easiest tranny to swap on a 240? AOD or the modern(Mazda)one? Will any autos work with the 3 Spd driveshaft?

driveshaft length will be determined by the length of the transmission and the yoke on the driveshaft vs what the transmission will accept.

So what would be needed to swap an AOD in? If I got the AOD from a newer truck, would the driveshaft work?

If you are doing a tranny swap just be ready to have a driveshaft modified or made. It isn't a huge deal.

If you swap an AOD in, be prepared to do some research on how to properly set up a linkage for the line pressure cable. From what I understand it doesn't have a simple kickdown; it's got a cable that adjusts transmision fluid pressure in relation to throttle position, and if it's not properly set up you'll burn up your trans in a matter of a few miles. People do it but you have to do it right. :2cents:

I was reading an article in CarCraft a few years ago and the author smoked 3 trannys before he got it right on his early Comet. I think you will know right off if it isn't right because it won't shift properly. Aftermarket cables are available from companies like Lokar and they give adjuting instructions I'm told.
Being a 3 pedal guy myself, I would lean toward the 5 speed but you will have to convert to the fluid clutch actuator.

You can swap to an aod or a c4,as stated earlier the tv cable setup is critical,it is very achieveable though, this website can lend some advice from people that have done it before, good luck with it. http://fordsix.com/forum/

As far as adjusting the TV kick down linakge, this can be done on car AODs using a vacuum gauge. There is a bolt you can take out and hook a gauge to in order to make sure you are getting the right pressure for the RPM and such. I would just put it all together and use a Lokar TV cable kit and then tow it to a trans shop to have them do the final adjustment. Don't drive AOD trannys unless you know you have that TV dialed in correctly or you can toast the trans in short order... at least with car AODs. I don't know too much about the truck side of things yet but I'd imagine its not that different.
