Exhaust Manifold Bolt

Post by flistr8 »

Howdy folks and Merry Christmas. A friend has managed to round off the head of a stubborn exhaust manifold bolt on his '67 F100. It's the bolt closest to the firewall (of course) on the passenger side. Any ideas on how to remove? He's been told to sacrifice an old socket, pour JB Weld in it and smash it on the bolt. After it sets up, remove and throw it all away. Or, file off head and slip the manifold over the headless bolt. Are these viable ideas? Any other ways to do this that might work better? Thanks in advance.

The JB weld way is way better than the other. Get a stud remover it will work once the manifold is slid off. Pour Coffee, Menthol Spirits, PB Blaster or Swamp cooler rust remover (if you are in that part of the country) and soak the living hell out of it.

soak it for sure. maybe vise grips would be an alternative. or cutting the head off. i haven't had any luck with jb weld on anything.

I'm pretty sure the bolt is not turning through threads in the manifold itself, just the head. So, cutting off the head should allow the manifold to just slip off the bolt. Then attacking the bolt shaft would seem a lot easier.

Coffee? Menthol Spirits? I never heard of that. I might have to try that sometime.

We used both in the Aviation Navy and they worked good. A lot of dissimilar metals and SALT.
