460 crank driven power steering

Post by averagef250 »

I just picked up a 68 Lincoln 460 and it has a wild power steering pump driven directly off the crankshaft. It's bolted to a special timing cover and sits right behind the harmonic balancer. Anybody know if these are any good? I searched for availability and found nothing, nobody seams to make parts for them.

I was thinking it would be nice to run just to make the engine look cleaner, but after your advice I think I'll stick to a saginaw canned ham pump like I was planning.

What is different about a 1970 and up timing cover and a 68-69 one?

Lincoln's had on the soft top and the hard retractable top that pump to run the tops. What a nightmare to troubleshoot because that pump had a problem where it would not produce enough pressure to run the wipers and steering and top at any time if two were being used. So owners after a few years that had gotten used to driving while raising the top \and turning the corner or running the wiper would suddenly scream they had no steering. The last one I worked on was a 430 and it was in 1976. The owner sold it when we told him the cost of rebuilding all the internal seals because the pump was putting out little flecks of metal. We did not resell it but sent it to the scrap yard in Beeville Tx.

Dragon, I think you may be confused, the PS pump on the engine has never been used to run a Lincoln top, they have a seperate motor and pump assembly for that. Even our 47 is that way (and on those the top motor also operates the hydrauilc power windows, love a cracked hose in a door! LOL). Also, the Lincolns were all soft top convertibles, only the Ford retractable of 57-59 were hard top convertibles. Finally, the pump on the engine was only used for power steering and windshield wipers (Lincoln and Thunderbirds had hydraulic wipers, another not so bright idea!). Hawkrod

Still wondering why the timing covers are different. I have several early and late ones and they all look identicle.

I called NAPA and the early covers don't show up in the Ford line but in Lincoln. So as we have discussed else where Lincoln did many things that departed from Ford. You got to get the customers in the door somehow. Also if you was going to spend 3000 more and you knew Ford under the hood stuff raising a Lincoln hood would always (in the older days) look different. So you felt that you got something different. My first gold valve covers was a shock. I had been working on Y blocks and 352s and 406s when this T-Bird pulled in with gold painted valve covers and air cleaner lid with the engine all black. You knew you were paying for the premium look.

The cover for a crank mounted power steering pump does not look anything like other covers so you may not have what you think you have. The cover with a crank mounted PS pump has a large flat area and mounting bosses for the pump. They definitely do not look anything like a regular cover. Hawkrod

It's clear to me the crank driven setup is different, but you stated in your post that I needed a 70 or newer timing cover to get rid of the crank driven pump cover. I have some 68/69 429 timing covers and they look the same as any newer cover.

When I said 70 and newer I was generalizing, the timing covers are the only part that is pretty much the same from 69 to 70 but you will still need a 70 timing pointer to go with a 70 balancer etc... so I was implying that you should find a 70 or newer motor in a junkyard and scavenge everything at one time. You really don't want to run 68/9 Ford or Tbird brackets and stuff as they use a special length water pump and nothing interchanges directly from 69 to 70 (you can fudge the alternator brackets if you have the 70 and newer spacers, they are just a tad different). By using the 70 and newer parts you can get aftermarket stuff that fits and stock replacement parts are easy to get, it just makes it easier down the road, the 68/9 stuff is just too specialized. Thanks for clearing that up. I did notice the balancers were different on the early motors like you said.
