351W swap?

Post by forester »

I have an '86 351W completly rebuilt and my original project is no more. How tough would it be to drop this in a '69 with a T18? Truck now has a 300 six. I can't seem to find out about 351's and 4 speeds. I would rather keep the six but it needs a rebuild and I have this motor just sitting.

The 351W and 302 are nearly identical, with the only differance being that the 351W has a taller block, so you will have issues finding headers that fit if you were going to use them. There were plenty of four speeds behind 302's, but I believe the two engines are balanced different, so you may have to put some research into a proper flywheel to put behind the 351. You may have to get a 302 flywheel rebalanced, but I'm sure that if there is a flywheel out there that will work somebody here will know what you need to be looking for. As for the engine all you will need is a set of 302 engine stands and motor mounts to bolt it in.

the bellhousin gblot patterns are the same for 240 300 302 351w and c i think. the 351m is the same bolt pattern as a 429 and 460. the 352 360 390 427 and 428 are in a bolt pattern by themselves also. if your swapping transmissions too. you may need a different length driveshaft. besides the engine perches which have already been mentioned.

all you should need are 302 engine stands stock 351w engine mounts and a set of exhaust manifolds or headers (302 headers will work but they are very very tight) then drop it in and have fun!!! transmission wont need to move and wat ever flywheel you had for the motor before will work!!! the spline on the t 18 should be 1 1/16 X 10 so any clutch with that will work!!! hope this helps!!!
