3.00 gears?

Post by hotrod ford »

me and a buddy were sittin in the mess hall the other day and said he was reading a magazine that had an article about a fairlane. the car had a 351c, a tranny with a stall and a 9" with 3.00 gears. would ford have put these in at the factory? also, how much torque would these have put out? i think it sure would snap your head back.

my ltd has 2.75 gears with a 351w. that car will move at high speeds. ive had it at 90-100 before the front end begins to shake

I think you might be getting it backwards, The lower the number the higher the gearing for faster top speeds. My 4.10 rear end has more snap off the line and torque to the ground then 3.00 but I could not go as fast on top end.

Think of gearing this way. If my truck with 3.78 and 33 inch tires tops at 4600 RPM in 4th adding a NV4500 in 5th or a ranger overdrive turns my 3.78s into 2.75s my RPM will drop to 3358. What happens though the rear end still spins like a 3.78.

Tall gears are fine in automatic cruisers where the slush helps get the vehicle moving at low rpm. My Flatbed could take off at a dead idle in 2nd gear with 4.10s and top out at 85.

my truck has 3.00 gears. with the 390, it wouldnt 'launch' like 3.50s but still did quite well. the 514 makes those great, lots of torque for starting out, and enough top end to take a pretty hot car to pass me
