1970 302 Tune Up Specs
I really did search. AutoZone does not have the point gap at the store. Online, they just list the dwell as 24 to 29. I also searched the forum. I am still new to the forum, maybe I missed it.
I would like the point gap for the 302. Also the timing. I have 35 as the plug gap.
For the dwell, and I suppose the timing, my information is to disconnect the distributor vacuum advance and plug it. Both vacuum lines ?
Thanks.

.35 is right. i dont think plugging both lines would hurt any thing. i think the second one has something to do with emissions or a secondary deal. i don't remember.

Thanks. I found in the forum the opinion that 17 would be the point gap, 6 to 8 timing btdc. Would this be correct ?fordman wrote:.35 is right.
I have seen other opinions but, 17 and 6 to 8 seem to be more accepted.

oops chiltons says different.30 spark plug gap and 24-29 dwell .21 for the points. 6-8 or more would be ok maybe more if it needed it.

Heheheh.... , the stealership said that they do not have the information on the computer, that they did not have books, that they did not know who I could call. So, I asked him...What if I brought my truck into you for a tune up ? Response....Uh uh umm we would have to find it, .Oily wrote: I guess I have been reduced to calling the stealer wheeler dealership, .

Re: 1970 302 Tune Up Specs
which is why i still have the tune-up charts that the various ign manufacturers used to give away in the 70's-80's. I can look this weekend & get you the spec's from an old motorcraft chart, if ya still need 'emOily wrote:America is doomed. To cripple a country, all you need to do is take out their infrastructure. I have the manual for the '68 car in the garage and the specs are about the same. The dwell is more important than the gap since the dwell is the amount of time the coil charges before firing.

Re: 1970 302 Tune Up Specs
I have that baby purring now and I have not even checked the timing yet. What a chore and what fun, . I had to drop the gas tank and give it a major cleaning and then repair holes in it by fiber glassing over them. Then I disassembled the carb, soaked, it and put it back together with it's existing parts and gaskets. Major varnish through out the fuel system. The truck would not run unless I poured gas down the throat of the carb before. Wife was not happy I bought it as I have too many toys and money is tight. Got to show her that it will run if I expect to spend some money on it.
Another quick question about tune ups.
A recap of my truck/my forum introduction.
Thanks again for the help, .

It seems that the engine is not original. I found an emission control sticker on a valve cover. The plugs were gapped at .45. I gapped them per 1970 specs. I wonder if I should gap them differently as the plugs are not 1970 type plugs ? She is running good but better is always better.Dragon wrote:.....and .028-.032 plug gap with BTF-31 plugs

Re: 1970 302 Tune Up Specs
.45 for plug gap means the engine came from a later car or truck with Electronic ignition.

Yeah, I kinda figured that but.....Dragon wrote:.45 for plug gap means the engine came from a later car or truck with Electronic ignition.
I do not have an electronic ignition. Stock (I think) distributor with one set of points, and two vacuum hoses which is another mystery as tune specs say to plug the vacuum hose for timing readings. Plug both hoses ?

yes both hoses. At an idle on;y one port is supposed to have vacuum on it but if the engine has any carb problems or temp controlled vacuum the other port could be leaking.
