Oil pump installation

Post by mjhaltom »

Does the oil pump driveshaft have to be installed from the bottom when the oil pump is bolted in or can it be put in from the top along with the distributer?

It has to be put in from the bottom with the oil pump. There is a spring type retainer ring around the pump drive shaft to keep it on the pump, under the lower boss in the block for the distributor so that when you pull the distributor it stays in the oil pump. There is nothing to hold it to the bottom of the distributor to try to install it from the top and nothing to help guide it into the oil pump... would be almost impossible to get it into the pump from the top

Well, I'm glad you have it taken care of, but for the record.

It does NOT have to be put in from the bottom, it probably should be...

Nonetheless it is quite common to remove the clip (which is close to worthless anyway) and drop them in from the top.
