Would this c6 work in my '72

Post by Bonnie_72_F100 »

I'm wondering if this c6 would work in my 1972 F100:

http://baltimore.craigslist.org/pts/832512134.html

The price is certainly right & this guy lives in the same town as my parents! Please let me know ASAP. Also, is it safe to assume off-the-bat that this would be a functioning c6 or would you (all) recommend having a trans shop look it over before going through the hassle of installing it?

Thanks!

Or possibly this one:

Even better price! What questions should I be asking these guys when it comes to getting a new (used) transmission?

No and no.

The first one has a small-block bolt pattern...won't fit your 360. The second one is for a 4WD with a married transfer case.

I got a response on CL in my area that says the following:

I have a C-6 from a 72 Gran Torino 351c car. It does have a B&M shift kit installed. It has a leak around the shifter shaft but I have the seal but not installed. $ 200.00 I also have another removed from a 72 but not sure of the condition. $ 100.00

What are the chances that 1st one mentioned could work? I'll request some more info on the 2nd one.

Thanks!

You have a 2WD LWB truck. It has a two-piece driveshaft, and the front shaft connects to the transmission via a bolt-on yoke. The only transmissions that will be a bolt-in will be transmissions from 2WD LWB trucks with a bolt-on yoke, not a slip-in yoke like a car would have.

Thanks! One of these times you (or someone) is going to say "Yes"! "Buy it"!

Thanks again, I'll let you know where that other c6 came off of.

Would this one work? Also, what questions should I ask if I call this guy?

Thanks all,

Depends on whether it's got a bolt-on or slide-in yoke. If it's got a bolt-on yoke, it'll fit.

I got this message today from a guy that lives closer. Price is higher, but he's willing to drive 1/2 way. I know you said I'd need a bolt-on yoke and it sounds like what this guy has:

"i have a jasper rebuilt 6c that i removed from a 1979 f150 a few months ago, the converter was left attached to the trans. the motor that it was hooked to was a 302 v8, i believe that it will also bolts up to a 300- 6cly and 351 winsor. i do not think the bolt up pattern is the same for the big blocks though"

Please let me know if you think this sounds like it'd be compatible w/ my 2wd 360 setup!

Thanks (again)!

The seller says that transmission has the small-block bolt pattern, which I mentioned above will not fit. You need one for an FE (360/390/428) engine.
