Is there any advantage of one over the other?

Yes, it is nice when dealers also give you good info about what you working on instead of just trying to buy something.

pretty much personal taste. they are both strong transmissions

NP435's creeper is 6.69:1
T-18's creeper is 6.32:1

Something I've noticed...

With a friend's old IH pickup (345/T18 combo), I can float-shift it pretty easy.

With my NP435, no chance.

Just a design difference or is his trans (or...mine?) screwed up?

the T-18 has more helical cut gears allowing to shift without the clutch. the np435 does not thats why it doesnt go as easily. I noticed that in my last f-100 with the t-18.

Has anyone ever seen the NP435 in a Camper Special? I have not. Just curious. I think the T-18 was considered more heavy duty, but to be honest, both are so bullet proof, I'm not sure it matters. FWIW, I rebuilt an NP435 using Novak's kit. It was my first tranny re-build and it went pretty smoothly. And it even works! My only complaint about the NP435 is they are know to walk out of first gear when doing a long climb. It's not usually an issue with these trucks, but mine is in my Jeep and it does become annoying. There is a fix, but I haven't done it yet.

I have noticed that too. My old 72 has a T-18 and I have shifted it for years without the clutch, much trickier with the 435 in my crewcab. I also like the T-18 because you don't have to mash the center passengers legs to get into reverse. A major consideration if you date chubby girls.
