I have been using my '68 f100 to haul two full 55 gallon barrels of water. It has a inline six and three speed. I would like to haul three or four (actually four) barrels in the near future. I only haul it less than 10 miles from town to my place in the country. I have a '67 with a 300 and 4 speed which I was thinking about using to haul water instead of the '68. The '67 also has a DANA 60 rear end I think. I don't know if that makes any difference. I think each barrel weighs about 440 pounds so four of them would be about 1760.
The reason I am hauling water is because I am planting lots of trees out there and I don't have county water hooked up or a well yet. Most of the time it doesn't rain so I'm giving them a little water to help them get established. I also am thinking about planting a bunch more trees this fall and I don't think two barrels would be enough. I usually go out there and water them about once a week or sometimes every other week.
Thanks,
Dan

i figure about 450lbs per drum. if they are upright and up against the cab, i would think maybe three.

Water weighs 8.33 lbs per gallon. Your truck, like mine is a half ton or has a payload of around 1,000 lbs.
55 gallons of water (not including the drum) weighs in at 458.15 pounds. multiply that by 2 and you are 84 pounds shy of what your load limit is in just water. What do you think your drums weigh?
Sounds to me like you may be at your limit. But I could be wrong.

If the 67 does have a Dana 60 it would handle 4 barrels better than the 68. The Dana 60 should have bigger wheel bearings than the 9" in the 68. The wheel bearings are the weak link in the 9". I used to haul a ton of hay when I had my 71 F-100 and it handled it pretty well. It was about 20 miles from the hay store to home. I wouldn't have hauled that much a long distance.
If you do haul that much weight remember to leave plenty of room to stop. The drum brakes on these trucks leave a lot to be desired when you have a load.

Re: how much weight can I haul in my f100?
well, I began hauling three barrels of water instead of just two. It seems to handle the weight just fine. I tried laying the barrels down to lower the center of gravity but it just puts more weight towards the rear of the truck. It rides better with the barrels upright and pushed up as close to the cab as possible. This is in the '68 F100.

I've hauled many 3/4 yard loads of dirt in my f-100, which is around 1,500 lbs. I do have helper springs though and they get a workout.

F100s can have different ratings. I had a light duty 72 that weighed within 400lbs of its GVW.
