72 F100 LWB 4X4 with a c6 and np203. I know that the c6 is not original to the truck from checking the vin tag but it is what it is. Just finished a 500 mile trip end of last month from NY to OH. Today I went to go pick up a truck cap from craigslist and moved transfer shifter from hi lock to just hi. Truck refused to move. Played a ton with shifter and got truck to move in 2 lock. Went to end of street and when slowing to yield sign lost drive power again. No engine problem all driveline. Rolled the truck backwards by hand thinking maybe it was because i had it in lock for so long maybe i had to back it up some for it to go into something else right? well eventually it went again but again in low. made it maybe half a mile (at this point kind of giving up on long trip now just seeing what would happen) and lost drivetrain again. pushed truck off onto a side street and after maybe 20 minutes of effort still could not get it to move at all. Crawled under truck to see what I could see and noticed part of transfercase shifter linkage was just hanging the pin was still in bue the cotter pin that holds it in place was gone. (fyi its not the arm that connects to cab shifter but the arm that seems to just link to bottom of cab at a static mount.) So gave up cause i knew i wasnt fixing this on the side of the road and called AAA (thank god for AAA plus) an hour and a free tow later i was back at home. replaced the cotter pin but still nothing. By the way the whole time this would happen and i was playing with it and still is happening i just get a terrible grinding noise from transfer case as soon as i move tranny into gear and would stay until truck is turned off. Retry starting in neutral but same result if move tranny into gear or try to shift transfer case with tranny in gear.
Funny side note it really scares the tow truck driver if he loads you on the flatbed puts the truck in park but it moves on him. guess he didnt listen when i said transmission wasnt engaging wheels. as in park wont work buddy.
any info or advice would be greatly appreciated as I am dead in the water for work, etc. until i get the truck going again
Is there something simple im forgetting or should i jusst bite the bullet and go to a trans shop? also has anyone ever dealt with cottman transmissions?

Transfer cases have two sections, range and mode. The NP203 has a special shifter with two rods that go to two different shift levers.
It sounds to me like you don't have the linkage hooked up right or at all. There is no such rod that goes to the bottom of the cab. Regardless of what the linkage is doing, unhook it and shift the levers by hand from under the truck.
Don't take the thing to a tranny shop to fix a 203 unless you absolutley have to. You're going to get a $200 bill for R&R and a $500 rebuild bill when a perfect working 203 runs $50.
That said, if the 203 is bad throw it away and swap in a 205.

FWIW, most 250's with 4x4 you gotta shut the motor off, rock the truck and jam the transfer case in gear. Once the
the gears line up it will shift in.
