What motor do I have?

Post by wolfpack »

I pulled a motor out of a 74ish pickup that a guy rolled not bad it had an eldebrock carb and hi rise manifold and headers and got it for a floor job. My question is on the side of the block by the headers it says C8AE-H which means it's a 427 with a hydraulic lifters and side oilers is this right??? Please help i'm lost i didn't think the come out in that year of trucks?

C8AE-H pretty much guarantees that it is not a 427 side oiler. The C8AE-H head was only used on 360 and 390 engines from the factory in a pickup (and low performance 428's in cars). The odds are it is a 360 as that is teh most common of the two in thses old trucks. Hawkrod

A 427 will have cross-bolts for the mains on the side of the block, near the pan.

Amazingly enough, not all 427's have cross bolts. The marine/industrial engines were sometimes made without them (and there are no records as to why that have been found yet) so never discount missing crossbolts as being a standard engine instead of a 427. You won't find many but occasionally one pops up on eBay and everybody poo-poo's it and it could be a great buy. They are designed to handle crossbolts so they can be added with new caps. Also note that there are 390's and 428's with the provisions for crossbolts but that is not what I am referng to. Hawkrod
