Dana 70 axle shafts

Post by RedneckTexan »

I've been thinkin, are the axle tubes/shafts in a Dana 70 SRW the same width as the DRW? :? And did the SRW Bumpside Dana 70 only come in the Crewcabs? Oh, and what is the spline count in the Bumpside Dana 70?

Thanks, John

I don't know but I'm pretty sure the years would matter. Weather it was a 67-72 or 73-79. I have a dana 70 out of a 79 f350 and the spring pads are in the same location as my highboy. Doug

On the newer trucks there are 3 different axle widths. From longest to shortest, DRW pick up, SRW pickup, and DRW chassis cab. The DRW lickup is longest so the inner wheels clear the inner fenders. The DRW Chassis cab is the shortest because the frame is 34'', about 4 inches narrower than the pickup frame. This may be useless information for the bump trucks. I think the DRW axle would be a bit shorter than the SRW one. I'm sure somebody here can measure for you.I'm curious too.

72 and older Ford Dana 70's were 23 spline. 73 and newer are all 35 spline.

The 72 and older dana 70's are something to be avoided if you hope to upgrade the axle. Parts are pretty hard to come by.

But is there a difference in width between the axle shafts in the SRW and DRW bumpside Dana 70's? :?
